When Bojji was introduced to us, he was this disabled kid whom many of us think won’t achieve anything. Opposite to that is his stern stepmom — Queen Hilling — whom many of us immediately judged as the cruel stepmother in this fairytale-like anime series.
But did you know that these two are closer than ever and that they have many things in common? And as you watch the series, you’ll be surprised even more about the character developments of these two wonderful people!
Let’s talk about Ousama Ranking today and ask ourselves, “What makes Bojji very special to Hilling that he’d go out to save her from the Demons of the Underworld?”
Bojji saved Queen Hilling in Ousama Ranking. In fact, he defended her from the underworld criminal and ogre — Gigan — whom Miranjo let loose in Bosse’s kingdom.
But Bojji’s newfound strength did not just come out of nowhere. No. In fact, his Underworld training with Prince Despa paid off. From his rapier weapon choice to reading martial arts books to fencing practice, Bojji’s swordsmanship skills are a labor of love.
That’s why Bojji saving Hilling from underworld criminals is the perfect opportunity to showcase the value of Prince Despa’s training. Not only did it demonstrate Bojji’s growth as a prince, but it also demonstrated the love he possesses for his stepmom.
How did Bojji Defend Queen Hilling?
Bojji utilized the Despa Arts to defeat one of the underworld criminals (Gigan) to defend Queen Hilling.
And as many fans already know, Despa Arts is the name of the fencing technique that Prince Despa of the Underworld taught to Bojji during the boy’s difficult martial arts training.
But saving Queen Hilling from Gigan isn’t the only mighty act that Prince Bojji did in episode 14 of Ousama Ranking. Bojji also saved BeBin’s associate — Mitsumata — the triple-headed snake with a decapitated middle head.
Then, he also saved the hell hounds that were mind-controlled by Miranjo, the mysterious magic mirror.
But those kind deeds were not Bojji’s deed alone. In fact, he had to enlist the help of his stepmom to save the giant serpent and the hell hounds. With her healing abilities and the magical potions that Kage returned to her, Queen Hilling cured Mitsumata and Miranjo’s hell hounds.
It was a treat to behold: Bojji saving his stepmom is rewarded by Queen Hilling nursing the creatures back to health. What could have been a better way to express love and sympathy?
What is Bojji’s Secret Sword Technique?
There’s a secret behind the Despa Arts and it has been revealed in episode 14 of the anime: it is a molecular-analysis technique that enabled Bojji to split a rock into two during his training arc.
In episode 14 (which is adapted from Chapter 86 of the manga), Despa demonstrated to Bojji how the strongest stone in the universe — a diamond — can be split into two.
By carefully studying the molecular properties of the diamond he’s holding, Despa threw it on the ground so the stone can land on its softest spot (a place where it will likely crack, and then get broken).
In anime logic, a diamond being split in half when its softest side is thrown to the ground is possible.
But, in reality, of course, it’s impossible as advanced scientific equipment is needed to cut diamonds and shape them into the stones that people often see on wedding rings.
Regardless of how fans view Despa’s teachings to Bojji, one thing’s for sure: Bojji became a strong prince. He’s no longer the boy carrying a mere glass of water to put out the fire of a burning building, but now a warrior prince capable of saving his family, friends, and the citizens of Bosse’s kingdom.
About Ousama Ranking
Ōsama Ranking (Ranking of Kings) is a Japanese comedy manga series by Sōsuke Tōka. It has been serialized online via Echoes’ user-submitted Manga Hack website since May 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Wit Studio premiered in October 2021.
The story centers around Bojji, a deaf, powerless prince who cannot even wield a children’s sword. As the firstborn son, he strives hard and dreams of becoming the world’s greatest king.
However, people mutter about him behind his back as “a good-for-nothing prince” and “no way he can be king.” Bojji is able to make his first-ever friend, Kage, a literal shadow on the ground who somehow understands Bojji well.
The story follows Bojji’s coming-of-age as he meets various people in his life, starting with his fateful encounter with Kage.
