It’s pretty evident that MAPPA has been frustratingly elusive about Attack on Titan’s finale.
With zero confirmation on when the show is scheduled to end and the monumental load of manga chapters left to cover, it’s no surprise the rumour mill has been spinning over time.
Besides speculations of an anime original ending, we now have fans wondering if Season 5 is on the table.
But will MAPPA really surprise us with another instalment?
It is unlikely that Attack on Titan will receive a fifth season, especially with Season 4 being popularly referred to as the ‘Final Season’. Moreover, there hasn’t been any confirmation one as well.
Will Attack On Titan End With Episode 87?
Attack on Titan cannot conclude with episode 87 as there are still nine chapters left to adapt.
The previous episode has caught up to the first few panels of chapter 130. With 1.5 to 2 chapters covered per 20-25 minutes of runtime, the upcoming episode will likely complete the rest of the chapter.
Even though it’s considerably short, the title “The Dawn of Humanity” aptly fits the chapter’s ending – The Rumbling at the shores of Liberio, ready to carry out its devastation upon mankind.
How Will AOT Conclude?
While the manga to anime adaptation ratio ensures smooth pacing without leaving chunks of content behind, it becomes apparent that it’ll take more than the ‘supposed’ final episode to conclude the series at its current rate.
So, let’s look at three of the best ways this incredible show can end on.
1. Extended Part 2
Stemming from part 1’s four-episode extension, it’s theorized that the second cour will also abandon the conventional 12 episode count. While it seems likely, it’s overshadowed by its cons.
For starters, only eight chapters can be adapted in four extra episodes even if we take the ratio on a higher side. Not only will this leave out the finale, but it’ll also result in a rushed ending with massive portions of the manga cut out.
Secondly, it would deprive MAPPA the chance of cashing in on the series’ rumoured movie.
If part 2 is only extended to the point where the Eldian Avengers squares off against Eren, it will provide the perfect build-up and an excellent premise for a theatrical release.
So overall, I hope MAPPA steers clear from this option.
2. Season 4 Part 3
A third cour compromising the series’ final chapters would be a better alternative for several reasons.
Besides allowing the studio to animate the show at a stellar pace and include all the juicy details to satiate manga readers and anime-onlies, it also guarantees a well-planned finale.
Even though a year-long wait seems to work against it, the stewing hype will actually increase the show’s revenue, as evidenced by the Crunchyroll crash this year.
While we do miss out on a movie, nothing beats watching a fantastic show reach its epic conclusion from the comfort of our homes.
3. Attack on Titan Movie
Episode 87’s delay has sparked the speculation of a colossal project in store for the Attack on Titan franchise – An anime movie!
After NHK delayed the episode’s airdate to April 3rd for a ‘special program’ scheduled at AnimeJapan on March 27th, the fandom went wild with excitement for a slim chance it’s a canon friendly movie to conclude the series.
While we’ve received no official confirmation, a couple of hints support it happening. Firstly, MAPPA wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to finish the series in the most breath-taking and memorable way possible.
Also, MAPPA’s position in the anime production committee is a dead giveaway to the studio’s influence over the show.
Moreover, with the weight of sharing the series’ losses, the animation enterprise would be incredibly invested in making a finale that rakes in as much profit as possible.
Secondly, the content of the final nine chapters is ideal fodder for a feature film. Besides the manga to anime ratio capping it at 2.5 hours, the brilliant action, emotion, and drama of the last acts will be relished by fans in a theatre.
Also, chapter 135’s climactic title, “The Battle of Heaven and Earth”, offers the most eye-catching subtitle for an epic theatrical release.
Thirdly, the success stories of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen breaking box-office records affirm the audience’s love for anime films.
So with Attack on Titan being a crazily popular series, it’s a given that fans will flock to its screening no matter the cost.
Will AOT Have An Original Ending?
It is yet to be confirmed if Attack on Titan will have an anime original ending. For now, there’s an intense tug of war between the technical issues that prevent it and hidden messages that foreshadow it.
Also, MAPPA’s remained faithful to the source material and only ever deviated on the grounds of creative liberty. So with little evidence from the production side, it’s challenging to determine what the future holds for AOT.
However, that doesn’t mean the community’s speculation isn’t rooted in rationality. Isayama has dropped lore bombs all over the series, some even dating back to season 2!
