The Sex Education season finale was quite conclusive and answered all our questions. All our beloved characters got their deserving endings, which prepares us to say goodbye to this wholesome series that entertained us for five years!
As confirmed by Netflix last year, Sex Education season 4 is its last and final season. The series will not be renewed for another season. There are various reasons behind this decision.
Sex Education has been canceled as the creators believe it is the right time to end the show. They’ve said all that they wanted to say through the characters of the show, and the story is at a good place to end. Moreover, important members of the cast have left the series, so it is high time the show comes to an end.
1. Several Cast Members Have Left Sex Education
Several important cast members have left the series in the recent past. Most importantly, Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley in the series, and Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong, have confirmed that they will not be a part of the series after season 4.
Mackey and Gatwa’s departure from the show is one of the key reasons behind the series coming to an end, as they played characters who were the heart and soul of the series. It would be hard for all of us to imagine Sex Education without Eric and Maeve, who are two of the main characters on the show.
Many shows have made the mistake of continuing the series even after important members of the cast left the series, and it has often not worked out well. For instance, The Vampire Diaries continued for two seasons even after the main female lead, Nina Dobrev, left the series in season 6. Similarly, The Office U.S. continued for two seasons after Steve Carell left the show.
In both cases, the last two seasons are considered two of the least loved seasons of the series. Fans of The Office could never accept the show without Michael Scott, while TVD fans will surely agree that the show deteriorated a lot after Dobrev’s exit.
Therefore, it is a good decision on the part of Sex Education makers that season 4 is the show’s last season. This way, fans can get closure about what happens to Eric and Maeve, and the show can end on a good note with both being a part of the final season.
Apart from Mackey and Gatwa, actors such as Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison, Tanya Reynolds, and Rakhee Thakra have also left the show. Most of them were not a part of season 4 as well. So, instead of bringing in new characters who will face constant comparison with previously loved characters, it is best to end the series.
There’s always one way or the other the franchise can continue, maybe through spin-offs, prequels or sequels. In such cases, fans seem to be more accepting of new characters and a new cast. Let’s look forward to some spin-offs set in Moordale!
2. It Was About Time for the Sex Education to End
Besides cast members leaving the show, creator Laurie Nunn explained that she realized it was time for the series to end while working on the season 4 script.
“It’s the end as we know it. During that process (of scriptwriting), it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end; the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about. I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time.”

The Sex Education finale left our favorite characters in a good place. While there’s a bittersweet feeling associated with the ending, the characters still get their happy endings. The makers also feel that they have already conveyed what they wanted to through these characters, so there’s no point dragging the show beyond this point.
Sex Education is a show about the need to be informed about sex, relationships, and sexuality. It conveys the message that sex education should be more accessible to people, especially teenagers, so they can make better decisions and feel less insecure about themselves.
As someone who has followed the series for five years, I think the show managed to convey the message quite well. The characters got realistic endings, and many relationships were mended. In other words, it is the perfect time for the series to say goodbye.
