There are three ways a conflict can be resolved, and currently, the patriarch of Waystar Royco is securing a lose-win for himself. After the season 3 finale, Logan Roy has locked out his children from the family company, but the season 4 premiere shows just how lonely he is in his victory. And that’s why he needs to lose at the end of the final season.
Shiv, Kendall, and Roman have always struggled to secure their father’s love (and power), but now they stand together against him. And granted, Logan makes a formidable enemy, but his wins are now numbed with loneliness.
Season 4 started with Logan’s birthday, just like season 1 did, and it’s a stark contrast to how dull his life seems compared to then. Sure, he just got his company to himself, but his children beat him at PGM’s bidding war and sized him up at his party. Plus, there were multiple moments where the season 4 premiere highlighted how dejected he feels.
Logan ended his night watching ATN alone, and if his sad expression didn’t hit it home, his conversation with Colin points out just how hard he’s taking his children leaving his side. He confesses to his bodyguard he feels like his best friend and that “nothing tastes like it used to.”
Though he is high on the list of the most influential people on Succession, and he is nearer towards getting everything he ever wanted, he still can’t seem to enjoy it.
His pondering about what comes after death is evidence enough that he realizes all the wealth and power in the world can’t compare to the love he got from his children, even if it wasn’t much.
I mean, he’s already lost where it matters most, so even if he wins, it’ll just feel as hollow as it does now. So why not make it a total loss in this long-going conflict with his children?
Logan’s been painted as the story’s antagonist, and his downfall will bring a satisfying ending to the series, with Kendall, Shiv, and Roman finally climbing out of their father’s shadow. They’ve already cut ties, which is the first step towards gaining power, and considering Logan’s current situation, it won’t be a hard fight.
