Theory: Why Is Sylvie After TVA? Is TVA Evil?

Sylvie has dedicated her life to serving one purpose: get to the Time-Keepers and destroy the TVA. But why?

Loki Episode 3 ended with more questions than answers. Sure, Sylvie’s identity was confirmed. But the snapshot teases of her past did nothing to identify her motives. How does Sylvie even know that the agents are former Variants? And why is she so hell-bent on destroying the TVA?

Of course, nobody has concrete answers yet. But here’s a theory to consider, just in case you’re curious enough.

1. Why Is Sylvie After The TVA?

So far, we know that Sylvie’s plan to destroy the TVA has been “years in the making.” And thanks to this Sylvie featurette, we know that Sylvie was brought into the TVA as a child.

Though this is pure speculation, it’s possible that Sylvie was snatched away from her world at a very young age. This would explain why she remembers so little of her mother and why she’s had all these years to plan and destroy the TVA.

Maybe, after she was brought in for whatever crime she committed, the TVA decided against “resetting” (trans: killing) Sylvie. Given her powers, they tried to erase her identity and turn her into a TVA Agent. But thanks to her mind-control, she tricked the TVA and escaped. This would explain why she’s the only one who knows that TVA Agents are former Variants.

Sylvie must’ve escaped with a lot of the TVA’s secrets; enough for the Time-Keepers to feel threatened by her existence. And since Sylvie sees through the TVA’s facade, she’s determined to end their propagative organization and get revenge for chasing her like a dog (and for possibly killing her mother?)

2. Is The TVA Good Or Bad?

Propaganda would have you believe that the TVA is the ‘savior.’ After all, they ensure that the universe doesn’t descend into chaos and Time is protected. But how heroic is an organization that plucks people out of their lives, erases their memories and brainwashes them into serving their cause?

Chances are, “not very much.”

Throughout the show, the TVA spends a reasonable amount of time vilifying the ‘Variants.’ But how bad can the Variants be? In the featurette, Sylvie is quoted saying something about the “inherent nature of the universe” that struck me as important.

The Universe wants to break free, so it manifests chaos. Like me.

So if it’s the nature of the universe to be tangled and in chaos (something that, as a Gen Z, I don’t need a lot of convincing to believe), and if the universe deliberately creates Variants to achieve this status, shouldn’t the TVA’s existence be unnatural?

If anything, the Time-Keepers are going against the natural to control Time and bend it to their convenience. They’ve been “ruling Time” and playing Gods by dictating the fates of millions of people. And since Nexus Events are a direct threat to their authority, they go after the Variants.

2.1 Are All TVA Agents Variants?

Sylvie confirmed that the TVA Agents are former Variants. TVA altered their memories, and they were made to believe the Time-Keepers created them to protect the Sacred Timeline. This is why Sylvie was able to manipulate C-20’s memories from her life on Earth.

I was told everyone who works for the TVA was created by the Time-Keepers.

This probably ties into why Mobius is so obsessed with Jet-Skis. Hopefully, by the end of the series, we’ll have Mobius finally realize this and regain his memories. Instead of, you know, getting killed.

3. About Loki

Loki is an American TV series created by Michael Waldron for Disney+ and Marvel. It is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with events of the series taking place after Avengers: Endgame.
