As the final scene fades to black, we are always greeted by the familiar sight of the glowing Marvel logo. However, instead of getting up and heading for the exit, we always remain glued to our seats, eagerly anticipating that ‘one more thing’ that awaits after the credits!
Marvel fans know that every Marvel creative comes with a bonus: a post-credit scene that teases the next chapter of the story, reveals a shocking twist, or delivers a hilarious punchline.
It is like the final dessert after an unlimited buffet of action, drama, and emotions, and fans don’t want to miss it!
Marvel Studios has been known for extensively using post-credits scenes, which always leaves us curious about the next creative. These short clips appear before, during, or after the closing credits of its films and television shows and tease future projects, resolve plot points, or provide comic relief for the audience.
However, Secret Invasion, which concluded its six-episode run on Disney+ on July 26, 2023, never had any post-credits scene at all.
Is this a sign that Marvel is moving away from this iconic tradition? Or is there some other reason? Let’s find out.
1. Marvel’s History with Post-Credit Scenes
Marvel’s usage of post-credits scenes dates back to 2008 when the studio released its first film, Iron Man.
In the scene, Tony Stark is greeted by Nick Fury, who introduces himself as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and informs him about the new Avengers Initiative to save the world.
This post-credit clip was the first hint that the MCU was planning to build a massive cinematic universe with superheroes crossing over to create Marvel as we know it today.
Since then, Marvel has included post-credits scenes in almost every film and series it has produced, with only a few exceptions. For instance, Avengers: Endgame only had a sound effect of Iron Man forging his first suit as a tribute to one of the most iconic characters in the franchise’s history (good old days).
Similarly, WandaVision, the first series of Phase Four, did not have a post-credits scene in its first six episodes but had one in each of its last three.
2. Why does Secret Invasion lack any Post-Credit Scene?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, MCU boss Kevin Feige reveals that the team wanted Secret Invasion to stand out as a self-contained story and didn’t want to distract the audience with stuff unrelated to Fury, Talos, and the Skrulls.
Feige further commented that they wanted the future of Fury, Talos, and other characters to end in a mystery as ‘sometimes less is more.’
He also revealed that post-credits will surely be integral to future Marvel creatives.
That doesn’t mean we’re done with post-credits scenes forever. We have plenty of exciting projects coming up that will have some amazing scenes that you won’t want to miss. But we also want to keep things fresh and unpredictable. You never know what we might do next.
3. The Future of MCU’s Post-Credit Scenes
Based on Feige’s comments, it seems that Marvel is not abandoning its ‘one more thing’ theory entirely but rather experimenting with different ways to use them. This could mean that some projects might have more than one scene while others might have none at all.
It could also mean that some scenes might be more subtle or cryptic than others, requiring the rapt attention of die-hard Marvel nerds out there.
Whatever the case, it is clear that Marvel’s post-credits scenes are still essential to its storytelling and marketing strategy. They are a way for the studio to connect all its creatives into a cohesive universe while also rewarding its loyal and attentive fans with something extra.
So don’t be too disappointed if you don’t see a post-credits scene at the end of Secret Invasion. It might just mean that Marvel is saving something even better for later.
