Why Does Freya Love Bell? Is She Evil?

From the moment Freya first saw Bell, she has been in love with him. Bell has his fair share of suitors; however, even then, it is surprising to see Goddess Freya become a part of that group.

In the beginning, Freya was curious about Bell and wanted to know more about him; however, as time passed, this curiosity of hers turned into a full-fledged obsession.

She even went as far as saying that anyone who came in her way of obtaining Bell would be punished. Ishtar being sent back to heaven was proof that Freya meant every word she said.

Freya’s love and obsession with Bell raise several questions in our minds, the first one being – why exactly does a Goddess love Bell? What did she see in him?

1. Why Does Freya Love Bell?

Freya loves Bell and is obsessed with him because of his soul, which is completely clear and unlike anything she has seen before.

In addition, Bell’s naive, pure, kindhearted, and hardworking personality, along with his growth, seems to attract Freya even more.

Before Freya descended, part of her duties as a Goddess was to judge whether a soul was worthy of heaven or hell.

Each soul had a particular color, such as the golden soul of Ais, and brightness. Freya is obsessed with Bell because Bell’s clear and pure white soul is unlike anything she has ever seen.

From that moment on, Freya has always kept an eye on him and has even instigated events to put him in dangerous situations so that she can see his growth. Furthermore, she is willing to leave the lower world if Bell dies and follow his soul to heaven.

Other than her obsession with his soul, another reason why Freya “loves” Bell is because of his resistance to her charms.

Since she can’t use her charms on Bell, she’ll have to win him over by putting in the actual effort, and in knowing that if he returns her feelings, they’ll be real, seems to be a great attraction to her.

However, with this obsession of hers comes an ever greater desire to keep Bell all to herself.

Freya has directly declared that Bell is hers, and anyone who stands in her way will be punished. We know that this isn’t just talk because she sent Ishtar back to heaven because of her attempts to “claim” Bell.

Bell training and Freya scenes

To conclude, from what we’ve seen so far, it seems that Freya’s interest in Bell seems to stem from the fact that he is unique, and thus she wants to add him in her collection.

However, as the series progresses, this love has started turning authentic, contrasting the superficial obsession she had for Bell (his soul) in the beginning.

2. Is Freya Evil?

Freya isn’t evil, but neither is she good. Everything she does, including helping Bell grow, is for her own sake.

She is willing to do anything to fulfill her goals and does not care about the general public’s good. Freya can be considered an anti-villain at best, at least at this point.

Freya seeks the best and most talented adventurers (male) and will stop at nothing to obtain and add them to her collection. The subject of her obsession this time is Bell, and it seems to be greater than before.

Freya wants to monitor Bell and see the changes in him and his soul as he grows. Due to this, she continually interferes with Bell’s activities even when knowing that it might kill him.

The fact that she is trying to make him stronger with aggressive means shows that she only cares for his soul and not the body it resides in.

While she does give him a grimoire and helps him progress, it is clear that she is doing everything for herself, instead of Bell.

Her possessive tendencies towards him lead to her threatening and attacking anyone she thinks might come in her way. Even Ishtar, let alone Ais, was subjected to her cruel attacks, with the former being sent back to heaven.

No matter the casualty rate, Freya is capable of doing anything if it means that her desire is fulfilled. This character of hers puts her in an extremely gray area, where even though she isn’t evil, she definitely isn’t good.

While she hasn’t done anything too extreme yet, there is a high possibility of her becoming a villain as the series progresses.
