Since episode 1 of the Bel-Air, the much-awaited reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, we’ve seen a much darker version of various characters. The tonality of the entire show is much more dramatic serious, and everyone always seems to be on edge.
One such character is Carlton, Will’s cousin. Right from the moment he meets Will, he tries to assert his dominance.
The reasons may vary from trying to show who’s the boss here or because he sees Lisa talking to him. Irrespective of how it began, it snowballs into something much bigger, and Carlton hates Will’s sheer presence with every passing day.
Carlton also behaves quite erratically. His temper always seems out of control, and more often than not, he lets it get the better of him. One such instance is where Will and Lisa are merely talking to each other.
Carlton sees this and pushes Will into the pool, who doesn’t know how to swim. When put together with multiple other instances, this behavior has made fans wonder if Carlton is a psychopath?
Carlton is not a psychopath but a merely disturbed kid spoilt by privilege. He is insecure about his reputation, has anxiety issues, and turns to drugs for comfort. His erratic behavior can be attributed to all of these issues.
Carlton is that character who wants to be the center of attention wherever he goes. It’s a classic character we come across in numerous dramatic shows.
He has ego issues, exhibits toxic behavior because he’s still hung up on his ex, and takes out all the angst on someone who doesn’t even deserve it.
Carlton shows all these traits but has moments of weakness. At the end of the day, all he wants is to have the reputation of the best son, brother, friend, athlete, student, and essentially wants to become perfect in every way.
This seems less like a psychopath’s characteristic but more like a teenager who is just under a lot of pressure.
In an earlier episode, when having a conversation with Lisa, it is mentioned that Carlton has had severe anxiety issues, due to which it’s not been easy on him.
The fact that he takes drugs every time he’s stressed, angry, or frustrated shows how he’s acting like any other spoilt teenager who doesn’t understand communication, vulnerability, or mindfulness.
When you put together all of this, you see an extremely flawed character who is very unlikeable but at the same time has his shades of grey.
This makes you empathize with him in certain moments and hope for a brighter arc that involves redemption for the character.
In episode 4, Carlton and Will are still at loggerheads with each other, but somehow the two are learning to coexist.
In the upcoming episodes, we might either see Carlton become a better person or get pushed closer to drugs due to unforeseen circumstances. Bel-Air episode 5 releases on February 24, and we can only find out how the character will progress in it.
