Things have spiced up a lot ahead of the HOTD season 1 finale. Someone just got hold of one of Varys’ birds and leaked a video clip showing the finale’s climax ahead of its release.
A very interesting fact that caught people’s eye in the clip is that Vhagar didn’t listen to Aemond and killed both Arrax and Luke despite the “One-Eyed” lord saying ‘No’ multiple times.
Vhagar is the oldest and one of the strongest dragons in the entire Westeros. The 200-year-old beast is one of the significant reasons for the Targaryen domination over the seven kingdoms. During the time of Aegon the Conqueror, Vhagar teamed up with Balerion and Meraxes and made everyone in the seven kingdoms to ‘bend the knee.’
After Balerion’s death, Vhagar became the largest dragon in the world. In the Harry Potter universe, there is a concept of a wand choosing the wizard and not the other way around. Dragons do the same.
Dragons consider themselves superior to human beings. They exercise their right to decide who they want to choose. If only a person proves to be a worthy rider, they can claim a dragon. And seeing the young prince become a fierce warrior in episode 8 made me believe that Vhagar made the right choice.
Let’s get back to the finale now. In the finale, Vhagar and Arrax clash while returning from Storm’s end. Vhagar chases Arrax and the latter suddenly attacks Vhagar out of nowhere. This most likely angers Vhagar, and she stops listening to Aemond.
Aemond says ‘No Vhagar’ repeatedly but to no avail. Vhagar has already decided to kill Luke and Arrax and does so with a fatal bite that leaves Arrax in pieces and swallows Luke.
Looking at the scene closely, you can see that even Arrax acts according to his own will. Luke never orders him to attack Vhagar. Young dragons have always been short-sighted with a carelessly aggressive temperament.
Arrax pays for this with his life. The dance of the ravens has now ended. Next season, the war of fire and blood will begin!
