The biggest question we all have had since The Matrix: Resurrections is how Neo and Trinity are alive considering they both died in the real world in Matrix Revolutions. But it seems like Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the only place which can bring back dead people.
But before we go any further, let’s just get this straight: the Neo and Trinity we see in The Matrix: Resurrections is the original duo and not another variant or from another timeline. In other words, it is the original duo who have been revived by The Analyst. They are not clones or from another universe.
In the movie, we see Neo as the celebrated games developer Thomas Anderson known for creating the Matrix games. Trinity is Tiffany, and is the mother of three kids.
When Neo wakes up in the real world, he is in his pod and spots another pod next to him which contained Trinity’s body. Both the pods were seen separate from the farm where human energy is harvested. (This was unclear, considering the main idea is to use their energy to the benefit of harvesting.)
Later, we get to know that the man behind all of this is The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris), who is first introduced in the movie as Thomas’s therapist. In reality, The Analyst is a program similar to The Architect which existed when Neo made his sacrifice and is responsible for the latest version of the Matrix.
According to The Analyst, the sacrifice made by Neo and Trinity as the end of The Matrix Revolutions inspired various factions of the machines and the duo became quite revered for the machines.
After the sacrifice, more and more humans unplugged themselves, leading to a scarcity of energy which led to a civil war among the machines. The Analyst, at this point, realized the power in the bond of Neo and Trinity and convinced the machines to resurrect them.
So, following the instructions of The Analyst, the machines took their bodies and began to repair and rebuild them using resurrection pods made by Sati’s parents. They plugged Neo and Trinity back to the Matrix and used them as a source code to build a new version of the Matrix.
As a result, the machines even ended up upgrading their bodies. The holes in their back that allow them to be connected to the Matrix is now bigger.
In short, the Analyst created his own new version of The Matrix, by using the connection between Neo and Trinity as a driver for his vision. Basically, the Analyst wanted to keep Neo and Trinity separated but have them “quietly yearning” for what they don’t have and “dreading losing” what they do have.
He tried to keep Neo and Trinity separated, because he knew that their bond was strong enough to solve the energy crisis but it would not happen instantly. So, everytime he created a Matrix where the two found each other, their bond broke the Matrix.
On the other hand, if they were kept too apart, it failed to create the amount of energy required. So, the Analyst kept them “close, but not too close”. This is the reason that even though Neo and Trinity cross paths in the Matrix, they do not know each other.
So, the machines kept Neo and Trinity alive in the orders of the Analyst, who wanted to use the connection between the two as the driving force for his own vision of the current version of the Matrix.
Apart from the logic in the Matrix universe, another reason for reviving Neo and Trinity as characters was definitely to bring back the Matrix franchise on screen and to bring back hope among the fans as well as the writers.
In the words of Lana Wachowski, “I didn’t ever want to make another Matrix movie. I told everyone for 18 years I didn’t want to make another Matrix movie. Lilly told everyone she didn’t want to make another Matrix movie.”
However, her personal tragedy made Wachowski change her mind and want to tell the story of two people coming back to life.
She further said, “Then I had a tragedy in my life, my parents passed away, and I needed something to help me with the grief. Inventing a story where two people come back to life was healing and comforting and I was non-judgmental, I just wrote it, and I didn’t know what I was gonna do with it, and then I read part of the story [to a colleague].”
So apart from the logical explanation in the movie, the revival and resurrection of Neo and Trinity is also a symbol of hope and positivity. Considering the world is going through a pandemic now, I guess this story could not have been told at a better time.

The Matrix: Resurrections will serve as the fourth instalment to the American cyberpunk franchise The Matrix. It is produced, co-written and co-directed by Lana Wachowski who has written for the previous Matrix movies as well.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss will reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity, respectively. Joining them is Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson.
