The Isu are an ancient and advanced humanoid species, basically deities or gods in the Assassin’s Creed franchise who were responsible for the creation of the Pieces of Eden as well as the human race itself.
Humans were created by the Isu to suit the specific requirements of their Isu masters and to also have the capacity to survive Earth’s harsh climate, as stated by Juno. The Isu never meant for humans to be ‘wise’, they just wanted the humans to be obedient to them.
1. If the Isu created humans, who created the Isu?
As the Isu are deities themselves, it is possible that the Isu performed genetic enhancements on themselves at some point before humans were created. Theories also suggest the Isu had discovered that reality (the Assassin’s Creed universe) is just a giant simulation.
However there is neither solid evidence nor an official answer to this question. Keep in mind that whatever answers fans have come up with are just merely theories and speculations.
2. How did the Isu create the human race?
It is stated by Clay Kaczmarek that the Isu had altered the genetic makeup of pre-exisiting primate species to create the human race. This lead to a huge gap between the transitional species between the archaic homonids and homo sapiens, also known as the human race.
To make sure that the Isu had control of the human race, they created various technologies and artefacts with one of them being the Pieces of Eden. It is said that certain types of Pieces made remote mind control possible by tapping into the network of neurotransmitters, located deep inside the human brain.
3. Did any Isu survive The Great Catastrophe?
During the Great Catastrophe, the humans and the Isu were in a military conflict although the catastrophe lead to the extinction of almost all the human and Isu population. Whatever human and Isu who were alive started to rebuild the world together after the Great Catastrophe.
During this time, although the human race viewed the Isu as their gods, they did not remain working under their solitude but both the Isu and the humans worked together tirelessly to forge a new path.
4. Are any Isu still alive?
After the Great Catastrophe, mankind had stopped worshipping the Isu which sealed their fate and eventually led them towards their extinction. With their population decimated due to the cataclysm, their extinction became inevitable and hence the Isu ceased to exist.
Minerva knew that the fate of the Isu was sealed and started to record messages for humanity’s future, which we see and interact with throughout the Assassin’s Creed games. Although the Isu went extinct, the legends and myths and their legacies lived on.
5. Were the Isu in conflict with each other?
It is stated that the Aesir (the Scandinavian Isus) were in conflict with the Jötun (Greco-Roman Isus) causing Ragnarok (The Great Catastrophe). Their conflict with each other is practically the main story of the Asgard-Jötunheim in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
The War of Unification was also a big war in which Consus invented both the Shrouds and the Sword of Even. Theories state that the war involved the Vanïr and the Aesir, as there was some sort of unification between the Norse and Germanic pantheons.
6. Why are the Assassins known as “Hybrids”? Are they Isu?
The Isu supposedly had a triple-helix DNA structure and six primary senses (the sixth sense being Knowledge) as opposed to the normal double-helix DNA structure in humans and five primary senses. William Miles stated that one in ten million could have a high concentration of Isu DNA.
The one in ten million would be the Assassins, who were hybrids meaning they had both human and Isu DNA. Having Isu DNA granted them special abilities like Eagle Vision and also resistance to the effects of Pieces of Eden. Hence, the Assassins are hybrids.
