The Witcher season 3 delivered a stunning twist when Ciri seemingly lost her powers in the Korath desert. We are not sure what it means for her magical abilities and role in the upcoming season yet.
Ciri faced many challenges in season 3, such as being hunted by the Wild Hunt, captured by Vilgefortz, and confronting various monstrous creatures like the Jackapace and the sea beast. However, her greatest challenge came in the arid lands of Korath, where she met different entities, including a sandworm, a unicorn, and a vengeful witch from a distant future.
Ciri’s journey in The Witcher season 3 ended with a shocking twist. She gave up her powers in the Korath desert after encountering various strange beings. This was a surprising turn of events, considering that Ciri had spent the previous seasons of The Witcher trying to master her abilities.
The Witcher season 3 had its highs and lows, and the Korath arc was arguably one of the weakest parts, especially in comparison to the original source material, the Time of Contempt novel. Season 4 will have to address this issue and not only restore Ciri’s powers but also her agency and character development that she had achieved throughout the series.
1. Why did Ciri give up her powers?
Ciri faced a dilemma when the unicorn she befriended was poisoned by a wound. She wanted to ease its pain and heal it, but the only way she could do that was by using fire magic, which is a forbidden and dangerous art in The Witcher Universe, as shown by Yennefer’s experience in season 1.
Ciri’s use of fire magic attracted the attention of Falka, who showed Ciri visions of how she could use her Elder Blood to dominate the Continent. Ciri rejected this temptation and chose to give up her powers altogether.
Ciri’s decision to renounce her powers in season 3 was not a sign of her agency but rather a result of her passivity. Though it seemed like season 3 would showcase Ciri’s independence, it only reinforced her subordination.
The visions that Falka presented to Ciri were meant to be a test of her character. However, instead of showing the corrupting influence of power, they only showed the positive impact that Ciri could have with her Elder Blood. Ciri’s choice to give up her powers was not a noble sacrifice but a confused surrender.
2. Can Ciri get back her powers?
Yes, it is possible for Ciri to get her powers back. The Witcher books suggest that Ciri does not completely lose her power but rather her access to it. This means that she cannot cast spells, but she still retains the knowledge of how magic works and how to use it if she wants to.
She does not forget her power, especially after her training with Yennefer. For instance, in Tower of the Swallow, Ciri is able to resist Joanna’s mental intrusion by reconnecting with her power, even though she cannot do it at first.
The Witcher books indicate that Ciri will eventually regain her powers and become the Lady of Time and Space. It remains to be seen how quickly Ciri will recover her powers, but fans have already seen a glimpse of her full potential after her witcher training with Geralt and her magic training with Yennefer.
Ciri has not yet demonstrated her true abilities, so the series should not delay them any further, especially if it intends to follow the source material more closely in the future.
3. What powers does Ciri have now?
Ciri still possesses all the powers she had before, but she lacks the will to use them. She has the ability to travel through portals, sees the future, and manipulate time and space, but she has chosen to abandon them in favor of mystical self-sacrifice.
In season 4, she will be as powerless as she decides to be; out of a sense of guilt for what she will do in the future. This puts her at a great disadvantage compared to the other characters who are gaining more power in the next season and who will try to exploit her absence for their own benefit.
Ciri still has the potential to access the formidable powers she possesses if she can trust her instincts and learn from her past experiences. She does not lack the ability to use her power but rather the willingness to connect with the sources that enable it.
If Yennefer can wield fire magic and control it to some extent, then Ciri can do the same once she masters it. However, for now, she will disguise herself as Falka and join the Rats, pretending to be ignorant of magic in order to avoid detection by those who have little knowledge of its nature but still want to use her for their own purposes.
4. The Other Powerful Characters in The Witcher
Ciri’s choice to renounce her powers in season 3 has created a power vacuum among the other characters. With Tissaia’s death, caused by her self-sacrifice out of grief and guilt for her students’ fate due to Vilgefortz’s treachery, there is no clear leader among the mages.
Yennefer is likely to fill this gap, as she shares Ciri’s ability to use fire magic. But unlike Ciri, she does not reject her power completely but rather restrains it out of caution and responsibility.
Vilgefortz remains a powerful threat in season 4, and Geralt of Rivia, despite Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, is still a formidable witcher.
Among the Brotherhood and the sorceress graduates of Aretuza, Yennefer stands out as the most powerful character in the series until Ciri recovers her powers and her confidence to use them wisely and effectively.
The Continent will face a turbulent time when Ciri decides to unleash not only her fire magic but also her full potential as the Lady of Time and Space.
