Sung Jinwoo’s rise in Solo Leveling Season 2 is nothing short of legendary. His Shadow Monarch powers allow him to extract and command an ever-growing army of shadow soldiers, making him one of the most formidable hunters in existence. However, when he enters the Demon Castle, something unusual happens—he’s unable to extract the shadows of the demons he defeats. This unexpected roadblock raises a question: why can’t Jinwoo turn demons into shadows, despite being strong enough to defeat them?
The Power of Shadow Extraction
Sung Jinwoo’s Shadow Extraction ability is one of his greatest weapons, allowing him to resurrect fallen enemies as loyal soldiers. However, it’s not an unlimited power—there are strict conditions. The target must possess mana, the process fails against significantly stronger opponents, and Jinwoo is limited to three extraction attempts per target. Some beings, like Monarchs and Rulers, are simply off-limits.

After his job change to the Necromancer class in Solo Leveling Season 1, Jinwoo successfully extracted the shadows of powerful enemies, including the knight Igris. So why does this ability suddenly fails in the Demon Castle?
Why Shadow Extraction Fails in Demon Castle
At first glance, it might seem strange that Jinwoo, who has extracted the shadows of powerful monsters and hunters, cannot do the same with the demons inside the castle. However, there are specific reasons why this limitation exists.
The “Demons” Are Not Real Beings
The biggest reason Jinwoo can’t turn demons into shadows is that they aren’t real living creatures. The Demon Castle is a special dungeon created by the System specifically for Jinwoo’s growth. Every enemy inside, including Baran, is merely data modeled after the Demon Monarch’s army. Since they aren’t true living beings, Shadow Extraction simply doesn’t work on them.

Think of it like trying to extract the shadow of a video game character—it doesn’t matter how strong they are, they’re still just part of a simulation.
Contaminated Mana Blocks Extraction
In Chapter 61 of the manhwa, a system message confirms that contaminated mana prevents Shadow Extraction. The exact mechanics behind this aren’t fully explained, but in-universe, it serves as a clear limitation. No matter how strong Jinwoo becomes, he cannot extract shadows from beings with contaminated mana, which includes the demons in the castle.

This also explains why, even later in the series, certain enemies remain immune to his extraction ability.
The System Balancing Mechanic
The leveling system is designed to control Jinwoo’s growth, ensuring he doesn’t gain overwhelming power too quickly. If he could extract the shadows of every high-ranked demon in the castle, he would be in charge of an army too powerful for the system to regulate.

Instead, he is rewarded with powerful items and Kaisel, Baran’s wyvern, as a shadow soldier. Kaisel was extractable because he was not a demon but a wyvern, making him an exception to the rule.
Other Notable Shadow Extraction Failures
This isn’t the first time Jinwoo has encountered enemies immune to Shadow Extraction. Jinwoo has faced other extraction failures outside of the Demon Castle. Baruka from the Red Gate Dungeon was too strong when Jinwoo first fought him.

Despite a hard-fought battle, the extraction failed, likely due to level differences. Another failure was Cerberus, the Demon Castle Gatekeeper, because Jinwoo wasn’t strong enough and hadn’t completed his job change quest yet.
Will Jinwoo Never Be Able to Extract Shadows from Demons?
Jinwoo’s inability to extract demon shadows doesn’t last forever. Later in the story, after fully awakening as the Shadow Monarch, he surpasses the System’s limitations and gains the ability to extract even beings that were previously impossible.

Sung Jinwoo’s inability to extract demon shadows in Solo Leveling Season 2 is due to three main reasons. The demons in the castle are artificial, their mana is contaminated, and the system deliberately restricts his power. While frustrating, this limitation ensures balanced growth and makes his journey more challenging.
But as Jinwoo continues to evolve, so do his abilities—eventually allowing him to break past these restrictions and command an even stronger army. His road to dominance isn’t easy, but that’s exactly what makes his rise so satisfying to watch.
