One Piece is currently exploring the Wano arc, with a massive rebellion army trying to take down an even bigger alliance of Kaido and Big Mom. With the battle on Onigashima in it’s early stages, I was re-reading parts of the One Piece manga, including Kaido.
One of the features of Kaido that stands out to me is that he seems impossible to kill. Even Eiichiro Oda, the series creator, mentioned a few years ago, that he was having trouble coming up with a realistic way to include Kaido’s defeat in the story. So let’s discuss what we know about Kaido’s powers so far.
1. Why can’t Kaido die?
Kaido is not immortal and it has not been established that he ‘can’t die.’ He has been defeated before, but not killed, simply because there were no weapons that could land a hefty enough blow to finish him off.
There is no concrete evidence about Kaido’s immortality. An immortality surgery was possibly performed on him by a previous user of the Ope Ope no Mi. It is also possible that Big Mom granted him a considerable life force, creating his life-long debt to her.
2. Kaido’s Introduction In The Story
People often say, “If it’s one-on-one, Kaido will win.” On land, sea, and air… among all living things, he is a pirate who is known as the “strongest creature”!!!
Kaido’s introduction in the story, especially the animated version, is one of the best introductions so far. He drops from a sky island straight down to the Blue Sea and lands near Kid, Apoo & Hawkins.
The introduction also mentions that since becoming a pirate, he had been defeated seven times and captured eighteen times by the Marines and the other Yonko.
During said captures, Kaido was repeatedly tortured and given the death sentence forty times. However, no method of execution was effective on him, and Kaido managed to sink nine massive prison ships that held him.
This is a big feat and makes Kaido look near indestructible, but we can compare it to Big Mom demolishing an entire village of giants when she was a mere child. She too, seems indestructible, but as we know, she is not immortal.
3. Is Kaido An Ancient Dragon?
There are some theories about Kaido being a dragon that ate a particular Human devil fruit. Big Mom herself refers to Kaido as “that thing,” instead of acknowledging him as a human.
Kaido’s DF
Kaido’s devil fruit was revealed in chapter 921 as a Mythical Zoan-type fruit that allows him to transform into a massive blue-scaled Eastern Dragon. In this form, he was able to knock Luffy out with a single blow.
4. Is Kaido Immortal?
With an unpredictable world full of devil fruit users, it is hard to be sure whether Kaido is immortal. We have seen two devil fruit powers in Oden’s flashback that have different users in the present timeline.
It is not a far fetched shot to think that a previous user of the Ope Ope no Mi performed the Immortality Surgery on Kaido.
Kaido’s Scar
Kaido is extremely tough, but it doesn’t mean he cannot be harmed. This point was made clear by Oda in Kaido’s very introduction when he mentioned that Kaido was defeated several times before. Oda drove the point home when Kaido’s character reveal included a giant scar on his chest.
Later during the Wano arc, we found out that it was none other than Oden who gave Kaido his scar. Using his two O Wazamono grade swords – Enma and Ame no Habakiri, Oden gave Kaido his scar with an attack called Togen Totsuka.
The attack from Oden broke through Kaido’s dragon scale armor and is the only attack that we know of far to have accomplished this feat.
Kaido’s Debt To Big Mom (Why Doesn’t Kaido Drown Himself)
This has been mentioned a few times in the series – Kaido’s debt to Big Mom. During a conversation between the two, Big Mom brought it up and labelled it a life-long debt. Not many clues have been given about this debt, but Kaido’s unreal vitality may come from Big Mom’s devil fruit power.
The debt can potentially be Big Mom granting Kaido a considerable life force, and it is not far fetched given their history.
This could be why Kaido cannot drown himself, even though he is a devil fruit user. His life force is just too strong.
The Immortality Surgery
The user of the Ope Ope no Mi can perform a special surgery on someone, making them Immortal, but sacrificing their own life in the process. This concept was introduced to us by Doflamingo, as he wanted Law to perform this surgery on him.
Doflamingo has been in business with Kaido for a long time, and it is possible that the previous user of the Ope Ope no Mi was forced to perform the Immortality surgery on Kaido. This is possibly how Doflamingo was able to source the fruit and how he knew about the surgery in the first place.
5. About One Piece
One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, and has been collected into 95 tankōbon volumes.
The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!
Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece.
With his diverse crew joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
