Episode 4 of The Rings of Power was filled with revelations and mysteries. One of the biggest ones was the whisper Isildur heard. When he’s on the ship, in the ocean, he hears the voice of a woman softly but eerily calling him by his name, Isildur.
So, whose voice was it? Who was calling Isildur, and what is the significance behind it?
Isildur could have been called by a woman from the beyond, whose spirit exists in the Meneltarma mountain. The mountain is a sacred place dedicated to Eru Ilúvatar, the deity worshipped by the people of Númenor.
The mysterious voice could mean anything at this point. While some might consider it a calling to fight against what’s coming, others might deem it a bad omen.
When Isildur is on that ship training to become a sailor in Númenor’s sea trials, he hears a voice from the west. When he looks in that direction, he sees a range of mountains. One of these mountains is the sacred Meneltarma.
It is the place for worshipping Eru Ilúvatar, a deity for the people of Númenor. According to the LOTR lore, he is a god that the city’s people prayed to before being corrupted by Sauron. After this, they start following Melker, which is another name for Morgoth.
In the previous episode, Elendil mentioned how his mother was widowed and had three kids to raise. So, there’s a chance that it could be her voice. However, it could also be the voice of Morgoth or Sauron, trying to entice Isildur by exploiting his vulnerabilities.
It could also be a foreshadowing of what happens in the future. You know what this could mean if you’ve watched the OG Peter Jackson films. In case you don’t, it’s never too late.
Who is Isildur? What is his significance in The Rings of Power?
In the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring, we see how Isildur was the man who chopped off Sauron’s hand, and with it, the One Ring came off. However, consumed by its darkness, he couldn’t get himself to destroy it.
Some Orcs later found Isildur, and his tale came to a tragic end. The One Ring was lost, but years later, it was found by Déagol. As we all know, Sméagol then acquired the ring and went on to become Gollum.
Another interesting thing is that the film also had a character called Aragorn. He was the descendant and heir of Isildur. He went into the war of the Third Age and, along with the forces, managed to defeat Sauron.
So, now that you know about Isildur’s destiny, know that this voice could either be a warning sign or a bad omen that leads to his doom. I guess we just have to wait and find out which one’s the case.
