“How I Met Your Father” follows the complicated love life of Sophie Tompkins and sets out to uncover the identity of her son’s father. In 2050, future Sophie will tell her grown son how she met his father on the night of Sid and Hannah’s engagement party.
The only solid clue that fans are given about the father’s identity is when Sophie meets him. To narrow down the candidates, here’s a list of every guy Sophie met on the night of Sid and Hannah’s party.
Jesse, Drew, Ian, Charlie, Sid, and even Barney are potential fathers.
Let’s get into the details.
1. Jesse and Sophie are potentially Endgame?
Jesse has enormous Potential to become Sophie’s baby daddy, especially because Season 1 saw her admit to Robin that she was in love with him. Sophie broke up with Drew because she kissed Jesse and wanted to take things further.
The pair did end up going on a date and sleeping together, but Sophie got scared when Jesse said, “I love you” while asleep. It proved too soon for things to work out for the pair, though, as Jesse kissed his ex-girlfriend, Meredith. However, Season 2 suggests a potential storyline for them to reunite.
In Episode 3, titled “The Reset Button,” Sophie explains to her son how she and Jesse were able to start their friendship over. It is further revealed that she still has a picture of Jesse in her home in 2050.
2. Drew and Sophie’s Breakup Isn’t the End of Their Relationship
Drew and Sophie’s romance may have ended abruptly in Season 1 of How I Met Your Father, but things aren’t over.
Drew and Sophie shared important relationship milestones, such as hosting a dinner party, going on romantic couples’ getaways, and meeting his parents. This all hints at him being the potential father.
The characters are friends, though Drew told Sophie he was still upset about their break up in Season 2’s pilot.
So far, Sophie’s romance with Drew is the most serious relationship she’s had, so there is potential for them to get back together in the future.
3. What does Ian’s surprise return indicate?
Ian was Sophie’s Tinder date, who went to Australia for work at the start of Season 1. However, he did return in the finale and then the premiere episode of Season 2.
Despite Sophie’s complicated dating life, Ian still wanted to give their relationship a shot. Sophie shockingly turned Ian down, saying she couldn’t pursue another relationship until she figured out why she ran away from one thing she always wanted: love.
Thus, she admits she was in love with Jesse. Sophie and Ian needed better timing. However, their timing could be right someday, so Ian could return and be the father.
4. Charlie and A Love Triangle?
One romantic comedy troupe yet to be explored by HIMYF is a love triangle within the leading friend group. In “Timing is Everything,” Charlie and Valentina broke up because she wanted kids, and he didn’t.
It would be interesting if Charlie pursued a relationship with Sophie after breaking up with Valentina. This would then open up the possibility that he has a kid with Sophie. It can be either accidentally or because he has a change of heart about fatherhood.
5. Sid and Sophie have more Platonic Potential
Sid and Sophie have bonded as friends over their belief in true love and their hallway romantic advice session. Due to his relationship with Hannah, Sid is the least likely candidate to be the father of Sophie’s child.
The pair eloped at the end of Season 1, and Season 2 saw the couple try to navigate their long-distance relationship while married.
Currently, Sid and Sophie only have a spiritual interest in each other. Unless something dramatic happens to put them together, Sid will unlikely be the father.
6. Barney Stinson- The Player
The premiere episode of Season 2 saw Neil Patrick Harris return as Barney Stinson, the iconic role he played in How I Met Your Mother.
While on the phone with her mother, Barney is seen driving a car that Sophie crashes into, where she explains that she is potentially dating her father.
Whether Barney becomes a future romantic partner to Sophie will be revealed in later episodes. However, according to the show’s creators, he will not be the father she accidentally dates.
Co-creator Issac Aptaker said that Barney would instead “have a significant impact on the trajectory, and main narrative, of your season,” so you never know.
Although everyone has an equal chance of being the father, Jesse is leading the race regarding the history and the bond. We have to wait and see how the story pans out and whether it will generate similarly mixed reactions as HIMYM did.
