In a stunning upset at WWE Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, Trish Stratus defeated Becky Lynch in a heated match that saw the interference of a surprise ally for the veteran.
Stratus and Lynch exchanged blows in a thrilling contest, but the tide turned when Zoey Stark crawled out from under the ring and delivered a devastating C360 to Lynch while the referee was distracted. Stratus then capitalized on the opportunity and beat Lynch with ‘stratusfaction’ for the three count.
The match was the culmination of a bitter feud that started as a friendship. Stratus had come out of retirement to join forces with Lynch and Lita against their common enemies, Damage CTRL, on the road to WrestleMania 39.
Stratus helped Lynch and Lita win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship from Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai on Raw by taking out Bayley at ringside. The trio then went on to defeat all of Damage CTRL in a six-woman tag team match at WrestleMania 39.
However, things took a dark turn when an unknown assailant attacked Lita before a title defense against Raquel Rodriguez and Liv Morgan on Raw. Stratus volunteered to fill in for her injured friend and partnered with Lynch, but she ended up costing them the match and the titles by getting pinned.
Lynch was gracious in defeat, but Stratus showed her true colors by brutally assaulting her former ally after the match. Stratus then proceeded to mock and taunt Lynch for weeks on Raw, claiming that she was not coming back and that she was superior to her in every way.
The seven-time women’s champion was proven wrong when Lynch shockingly returned to Raw on May 8 and attacked her rival, setting up a challenge for Night of Champions.
The match pitted two of the most decorated and respected female Superstars in WWE history against each other, but Stratus resorted to cheating to get the upper hand over Lynch with the help of Stark, who had recently debuted on the main roster from NXT.
Stratus may have won the battle, but she may have also ignited a war with Lynch that could rage on throughout the summer.
With this victory, Stratus proved that she still has what it takes to compete with the best in the business, but she also made a powerful enemy in Lynch, who will not rest until she gets her revenge.
The rivalry between these two icons is far from over, and the WWE Universe will be anticipating what happens next.
About WWE: Night of Champions (2023)
The 2023 Night of Champions was the 10th Night of Champions professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and live-streaming event produced by the American promotion WWE.
It was held for wrestlers from the promotion’s Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event took place on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Jeddah Super Dome in Jeddah Super Dome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and was the first Night of Champions held since the 2015 event.
This would subsequently be the first Night of Champions held following the reintroduction of the brand split in July 2016 and the first to live stream on Peacock after the American version of the WWE Network merged under Peacock in March 2021. The event also replaces the previously annual Hell in a Cell event.
