For the past decade, a deep-rooted rivalry has witnessed the Templars and the Assassins engaging in a bloody war across different timelines in the Assassin’s Creed series. Needless to say, fanatics of Assassin’s Creed games, movies, books, and comics haven’t been devoid of entertainment due to the same.
For those new to the franchise, the franchise revolves around Desmond Miles, a bartender. He stumbles upon the fact that he is the descendant of numerous lines of legendary assassins. By utilizing the Animus, he travels back in time and relives the memories of his ancestors via their shared DNA. Hence, Assassin’s Creed gamers take charge of deadly assassins from the AC universe and explore the secrets of each assassin, starting from the very first.
Canonically, Bayek of Siwa (aka Amun) was the first ever assassin in the Assassin’s Creed universe. He was the last active Medjay of ancient Egypt who, alongside his wife Aya, founded the Hidden Ones that later became the Assassins Brotherhood. He’s the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed: Origins.
Here’s more about Bayek of Siwa, the first assassin of the Assassin’s Creed universe.
Bayek of Siwa’s Origin
According to Assassin’s Creed backstory, Bayek was born and brought up in a town called Siwa in Egypt. He is the son of Ahmose and the Medjay, Sabu. Unfortunately, he grew up to become the last and one of the strongest Medjay Egypt ever witnessed.
Note: The Medjays are an ancient Nubian Egyptian order rendered powerless under the reign of Greek Ptolemies. During Greek rule, the Medjays were looked at as nothing more than an inconvenient disruption.
Why did Bayek of Siwa establish the Hidden Ones in Assassin’s Creed?
Bayek and his wife Aya established the Hidden Ones to prevent the Order of the Ancients from taking control of the Egyptian Kingdom. They set up numerous bureaus in Rome and Memphis to spread awareness and fight for the people’s freedom by recruiting skilled assassins.
Bayek of Siwa married an Alexandrian woman, Aya. She moved in with him and accompanied him in training in the arts of the Medjay, which led her to become a worthy warrior. In addition, she had a son named Khemu with Bayek.
Aya is also a loyal servant to the exiled Queen Cleopatra, a figure in the story whom Bayek isn’t thrilled to work for but has to due to his wife.
The couple took up a central role in the civil war that broke out between Queen Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. The Order of the Ancients saw this conflict as the perfect opportunity to seize control of the kingdom.
To disrupt a possible coup during a period of internal tension within the kingdom, Bayek and Aya opened multiple organizations throughout the Roman Republic. They secretively recruited subjects willing to fight for freedom and trained them to become skillful warriors. These organizations collectively came to be called the Hidden Ones.
