How did Shaltear get mind-controlled in Overlord season 1?

Towards the end of episode 10 of the Overlord anime, we learn that the vampire Shalltear Bloodfallen has begun revolting against Ainz Ooal Gown. This sudden change in her character development had a few viewers scratching their heads in confusion.

Shalltear Bloodfallen is a true vampire created by Lord Peroroncino. She serves as the flood guardian of the first to third floors of the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

Shalltear’s sudden betrayal was made even more suspicious by the fact that her name was now in red when checked in the Master Source.

Once Ainz meets her in person, he tries to use a super tier magic spell to help her. After his spell fails, he later reveals that Shalltear is most probably under a spell with the power of a world level item.

Who puts the spell on Shalltear Bloodfallen?

Lady Kaire put the mind control spell on Shalltear Bloodfallen in Overlord season 1 using a World Class item called ‘Downfall of Castle and Country.’ She’s a member of the Black Scripture group under the Slane Theocracy. The spell wasn’t complete hence Shaltear went into defense mode.

The Black Scripture is part of the elite military organisation called the Six Scriptures of the Slane Theocracy. Slane Theocracy is a human nation neighbouring Nazarick that promotes human supremacy.

Ainz had ordered Shalltear to assist Sebas Tian and Solution Epsilon to enslave criminals who can use martial arts and magic.

Later on, we watch a Blood Frenzied Shalltear slaughtering everyone she finds in a hideout of humans. Once she exists the hideout, she comes across another group of adventures and takes them on as well. One of these adventures throws a red healing potion at her.

Shalltear forces the adventurer to tell her where she obtained the potion from. However, some of the adventures take this opportunity to escape from her.

When Shalltear starts chasing after them, she meets the members of the Black Scriptures, who try to battle the frenzied vampire but are shot down by her. It was during this scuffle that Lady Kaire brainwashes Shalltear.

How did the Slane Theocracy get a world class item?

The ‘Downfall of Castle and Country’ is the world class item that was used by the Black Scripture to put Shalltear Bloodfallen under the mind-control spell.

The world class item ‘Downfall of Castle and Country’ belonged to the Six Great Gods of the Slane Theocracy, 600 years ago. After their passing, the artifact was passed down to different users in the Slane Throcracy and ends up in the hands of Lady Kaire.

The Black Scripture was suposed to use the world item to control the Catastrophe Dragon Lord. However, it was instead used to brainwash Shalltear Bloodfallen once they crosses paths with her.

Since the user of the world item was severely wounded after activating it, the mind-control was  successful yet incomplete.

The Slane Theocracy have items from Yggdrasil including the ‘Downfall of Castle and Country’  because the Six Great Gods that they worship were Yggdrasil players.

What happens to Shalltear Afterwards?

Ainz believes it was his fault that Shalltear ended up in her current condition so he plans on dealing with the situation himself. He visits the Nazarick treasury to stock up on items to help him against the brainwashed vampire.

The final episode of the first season follows the tense battle of magic between Shalltear Bloodfallen in her Blood Valkyire form and Ainz Ooal Gown using various magic items as reinforcements.

Finally Ainz uses the armour of Lord Touch Me to get the upper hand in the fight and kills off the mind-controlled Shalltear. Later he resurrects her to her original state after spending 500 million gold from the treasury.

The other guardians get Shalltear up to speed on the recent happenings and scold her for causing Lord Ainz so much trouble.

Ainz enjoys the moment of bonding but is concerned about the ones enemies who put Shalltear under the spell and prepares to strengthen Nazarick.
