Zeus is the main antagonist of the Greek saga of God of War, an action-adventure videogame series. He is the father of Kratos, the protagonist of the series. Zeus is often referred to as the “King of the Gods” because he is considered supreme amongst all the Greek pantheons who live on Mount Olympus.
However, even a supreme being such as Zeus, with the power of the heavens on his side, falls prey to the tremendous rage of Kratos, who is on a personal mission to wipe out all the gods from the face of the earth.
Kratos killed Zeus by stabbing him alongside Gaia, the Titan, using the Blade of Olympus during the end of God of War 3.
Kratos’ intentions behind killing Zeus were fueled by anger and vengeance. But ironically, it was his own actions that led to this animosity between him and his father.
Zeus was prophecized to be killed by one of his “marked sons” by an oracle, which made him paranoid of their existence. But when Kratos opened the Pandora’s Box, an ancient Greek artifact, to gain its power and exact his revenge on Ares, Zeus’ fear increased immensely, and he decided to eliminate all his rebellious sons, including Kratos.
To deny the oracles’ prophecy and save himself, Zeus killed Kratos in God of War 2 using the Blade of Olympus. But, Gaia helped Kratos escape the underworld and decided to further assist him in killing Zeus.
After a couple of failed attempts, Kratos finally managed to put an end to Zeus once and for all, alongside several other Greek Gods and Titans.
What happened after Kratos killed Zeus?
The Greek world was destroyed after Kratos killed Zeus and all the other gods residing on Mount Olympus.
The entire world initially floods to an unprecedented level when Kratos kills Poseidon, the god of the sea, then a massive horde of mosquitos is released all over the world as he puts an end to Helios.
Killing Hera causes the destruction of all plant life and finally, taking down Zeus leads to the fall of Olympus and the world as a whole.
With the Greek world destroyed and nothing more left to live for, Kratos ultimately decides to stab himself with the Blades of Olympus, but luckily, he survives and makes his journey to the Norse world, where the events of God of War (2018) take place.
Will Zeus return in God of War: Ragnarok?
Zeus may return in God of War: Ragnarok in his astral form or merely as an illusion created by Kratos’ consciousness.
In fact, he already made an appearance in God of War (2018) when Kratos sees his apparition in Helheim during the latter half of the gameplay.
Kratos, haunted by his past, also visualizes and talks to Athena in a cutscene, which shows Santa Monica Studios’ willingness to bring back some of the old characters crucial to Kratos’ storyline.
