The much-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series premiered on Disney+ today with Episodes 1 and 2. It was a delight watching Ewan McGregor reprise his role as the Jedi Master, and the story seems to be pretty gripping, too.
The episodes were filled with fan-service moments as we saw one popular character after another appear on the screen and push those buttons in our brains that cause nostalgia. We saw Luke Skywalker, Leia, C-3PO, a Jawa, and numerous others.
However, one character that truly piqued fans’ interest was the clone trooper in Episode 2. Everyone wondered who he was and why he did not try killing Obi-Wan Kenobi the moment he saw him. Well, I might have some theories on it.
The clone trooper is played by Temuera Morrison, who previously played Jango Fett and Boba Fett. He is credited as a “Veteran Clone Trooper” on IMDb. Some fans speculate him to be Captain Rex from the 501st Legion led by Darth Vader.
Here’s some context just to jog your memories. In Episode 1, Leia gets kidnapped and is taken to Planet Daiyu. So, Obi-Wan reaches the same place to search for and rescue Anakin and Padme’s daughter.
When he’s on the planet, he comes across a clone trooper who looks pretty old and is begging for credits while sitting on a street. Kenobi gives him a few and moves along. So, who exactly is this trooper?
While I have a couple of speculations, let’s look at the timelines to understand a few things. Temuera Morrison had played both Boba and Jango, so could it be either of them. Well, let’s find out.
Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place in 9 BBY. Jango Fett had already died in 22 BBY, which rules him out. On the other hand, we still have his clone son Boba Fett, who was born in 32 BBY and is known to be very much alive even after the events of Return of the Jedi, which took place around 4 ABY.
So could it be him? Before I answer the question, here are a couple of other details. The armor worn by the veteran was pretty similar to the one worn by someone in 501st Legion that led the massacre, which essentially ended the Jedi Order. That’s right! I’m talking about Order 66.
Now, one person who was a part of it was Captain Rex, and one person who wasn’t a part of it was Boba Fett. While the trooper we saw in the scene does look like an older Captain Rex, and this information further confirms his identity, we still can’t be entirely sure. I guess we just have to wait for upcoming episodes which might reveal the true identity of this veteran clone trooper.
