The much-awaited PS4 exclusive God of War: Ragnarok is finally here. The game is a direct sequel to 2018’s God of War and will continue where the first game left. The game will conclude the Norse saga of the series.
God of War: Ragnarok introduces a lot of new characters from Norse Mythology such as Thor and Odin as well as some familiar faces that will also be making a comeback such as Mimir, and Freya.
I have decided to put together a list of the strongest characters which you will come across in your journey in this much-awaited conclusion. Please keep in mind, the list is based entirely on my opinions.
THIS LIST CONTAINS HEAVY SPOILERS FOR THE GAME GOD OF WAR: RAGNAROK. If you don’t want to ruin your experience of the game I suggest you turn back now.
10 Angrboda
Angrbroda is a young giant who becomes a friend of Atreus/Loki and aids both Kratos and Atreus in their fight against the King of Aesir Gods, Odin.
According to Norse Mythology, her name means ‘the bringer of grief’ she serves as the consort of Loki and will bore the wolf Fenrir, the world serpent, and Hel.
In the game, Angrboda is portrayed as a young giant who is a friend of Atreus and takes care of Fenrir after his revival and helps both Kratos and Atreus from time to time. She also helps in making Atreus realize his true purpose.
9 Jörmungandr
Jormungandr, or the World Serpent, in Norse Mythology, is the creation of Loki. Jormungandr is destined to fight Thor during Ragnarok. He becomes an ally of Kratos and Atreus/Loki when they awake the Giant Serpent from his sleep in the Lake of Nine.
Jormungandr made his appearance in the game much before the actual events of Ragnarok, which was later explained in God of War: Ragnarok. It was prophesied that Thor would strike the world serpent so hard that it will be teleported back in time into another timeline much before he was born.
During the end of God of War: Ragnarok, we see Jormungandr fighting alongside Kratos and Atreus, but he seemingly disappears, thus it is believed he was struck by Thor and the prophecy became true. This also explains how Kratos and Atreus found Jormungandr in the first game.
8 Fenrir
In Norse Mythology, Fenrir is one of the offspring of Loki and Angrboda, who is destined to destroy the Aesir Gods and swallow Odin thus killing him.
In God of War: Ragnarok, Fenrir is one of the wolves that Kratos and Atreus/Loki saves from the raiders, but soon Fenrir dies of old age. Unbeknownst to Atreus and Kratos, Atreus casts a spell on the dying Fenrir thus storing his soul in his knife.
During a fight with a dead wolf named Garm who was unkillable as he was already dead and without a soul, Atreus transferred the soul of Fenrir into it thus defeating Garm and reviving Fenrir much bigger and stronger.
7 Mimir
Mimir was an advisor to Odin and an ambassador of gods before his imprisonment by Odin. He is the God of Wisdom and Knowledge and is also referred to as the Smartest man/head alive.
He was rescued by Kratos and Atreus and in return for their help, Mimir helps them with his vast knowledge and accompanies them throughout their journey up until Ragnarok and even beyond.
6 Heimdall
Heimdall is the God of Foresight, and Surveillance, he is responsible for sounding the horns and heralding when Ragnarok comes.
In the game, Heimdall serves as a loyal servant to Odin and does his bidding he is ultimately killed by Kratos in a fit of rage, and thus his death marked the next stage of the prophecy.
5 Loki/Atreus
Atreus is the son of Kratos and Laufey, a giant (Faye), this revelation took place at the end of the first game. This revelation established the fact that Atreus will eventually become the infamous Loki, the God of Chaos, Mischief, and Illusions.
Atreus who from a very young age has been trained by Kratos is one of the strongest characters in the game. He is directly or indirectly responsible for the death of various Gods such as Baldur, Magni, Modi, and Odin.
4 Freya
Freya is the mother of Baldur, ex-wife of Odin, and former Queen of Valkyries. She is the goddess of Love and beauty.
Freya at first allied herself with Kratos to get revenge on Odin, but when Kratos killed Baldur, her alliance shifted. Now in God of War: Ragnarok Freya, just like Thor seeks revenge on Kratos and blames him for the death of her son. Eventually, the differences between Kratos and Freya are resolved and they again join forces to kill Odin.
3 Thor
Thor is the son of Odin, father of Magni and Modi (both killed by Kratos in the first game). He is the God of Thunder, Lighting, and Storms. Thor is one of the strongest characters in the game and is only second to Odin in Norse Mythology.
He wields the mighty hammer – ‘Mjolnir’ forged by Brok and Sindri who also forged Kratos’s Axe. Thor blames Kratos for the deaths of his sons and seeks revenge against Kratos. The duo fought two duels in both of which Thor was bested by Kratos but was never killed.
In the end, Kratos convinces Thor to let go of the past and look beyond the webs of lies of Odin and asks him to be a better father for the sake of both of their children. Thor agrees with Kratos and the duo stops fighting, but a disappointed Odin kills Thor after the former rejects his orders of killing Kratos.
2 Odin
Odin is the king of the Aesir Gods and stands at the top of the Norse god’s pantheon. He is the father of Thor, Tyr, and Baldur. Odin is incredibly powerful and is the God of Sky, War, Death, Wisdom, Poetry, and Magic. He spent most of his life in pursuit of knowledge to avoid the great catastrophe of Ragnarok.
Odin is the main antagonist of the God of War: Ragnarok, and proves himself quite a formidable foe, he disguises himself as Tyr and succeeds in killing Brok and infiltrating Kratos’s allies. Odin is also successful in killing his son Thor when the latter refused to follow his orders of killing Kratos.
1 Kratos
Kratos is the strongest character in God of War Ragnarok, he is the titular protagonist of the series, and the Spartan/Greek God of War. Kratos who is also known as the god killer, single-handedly killed all the gods in the Greek Pantheon, including Zeus. He is also responsible for the death of various Norse Gods as well such as Baldur, Thor, Odin, etc.
This makes Kratos the strongest character not only in God of War: Ragnarok but in the entire series. What the future holds for this god is still uncertain but we can be sure where he ends up, some very powerful heads are going to roll.
