Batman: The Long Halloween is a direct-to-video release based on the DC comic of the same name. The film follows a case Batman is trying to solve along with Captain Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent with an appearance from the big bad villains of Gotham.
So as someone who has not seen many of the comic-to-video films of the DC universe, I loved this one. I don’t know how good it is compared to some of the popular stuff like The Killing Joke and Flashpoint, but I’m for sure going to watch those next.
In this film, we see some popular villains such as Carmine Falcone, Salvatore Maroni, Solomon Grundy, The Calendar, and the crowned prince of crime, The Joker! But with so many villains to face, who is the main villain in Batman: The Long Halloween?
The Holiday Killer is the main villain of Batman: The Long Halloween. He kills Johnny Viti, Mickey Chen, and Alberto Falcone on the holidays of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and New Year, respectively.
The killer first kills Johnny Viti while he was soaking himself in his bathtub. The weapon used was an unidentified gun with a taped handle and a baby bottle nipple used as a silencer. With this murder, there are several theories regarding who the killer might be and what the motives.
However, by the time we reach the next holiday, Thanksgiving, there’s yet another murder, and all theories need to be reassessed. This time it was Mickey Chen from the San Ho Hui gang who bombed Harvey Dent’s home. The murder weapon was still the same.
Batman, along with James Gordon, goes to Arkham Asylum to seek help from The Calendar Man, who names the perpetrator – Holiday! Here’s where we come to know that the Joker has escaped, and what ensues is complete madness that leads us to the climax.
Batman confronts Alberto Falcone to being The Holiday Killer, and just as he does so, the Holiday murders his third victim on New Year’s Eve. After a brief chase, The Holiday is escaped, and just like Batman, we are left with multiple questions and theories.
There will be a Part Two of Batman: The Long Halloween releasing next month, and we shall have our answers. But knowing myself, the anxiousness of not knowing would eat me up. So I quickly googled the comics and have the answers.
If you’ve done the same, then welcome to the club, and if not, don’t worry, I am not going to give you spoilers. Since it’s a comic-to-video adaptation, I don’t think there would be any significant changes to the narrative, so the killer’s identity in the film must be the same as in the comics.
However, The Holiday Killer is not the only good thing about the film. Any scene with The Joker in it will leave you amused. The puns and witty dialogues make you chuckle while also showing the dark and twisted side of the crowned prince of crime. I was particularly intrigued by The Calendar Man and will read more about him after writing this article.
Perhaps Part Two will have more appearances from these characters, among others, and I can’t wait to watch it!
