Wednesday’s Monster/Killer Reveal is the Show’s Biggest Betrayal

Netflix has brought out the spooky, kooky, and definitely a little ooky, Addams family to its platform. Headlining the show is Wednesday Addams, who enrolls in a supernatural school for outcasts, but soon finds herself solving the mystery of a killer going berserk.

Mid-season, Wednesday learns that the killer is a type of monster called a Hyde, who can also disguise themselves as a normal human. This puts a lot of her classmates on her suspect list. But does Wednesday actually manage to unmask who exactly is the Hyde?

The Wednesday finale reveals that Tyler is the Hyde, a monster who has been killing off all the other characters in the woods. He was working under the orders of Miss Thornhill, who had been controlling him through a chemical potion.

But it takes two to tango. So, while there was only one monster going about killing folks, Tyler was simply a puppet for the main villain. Let me break it down for you:

How did Tyler become the Hyde?

Tyler

In the penultimate episode, Wednesday has a vision, while kissing Tyler, that reveals he is the Hyde. As she digs deeper, she finds out that his mother was an outcast and a Hyde who attended Nevermore as well.

Tyler was definitely not on my list, given how good-natured and charming he appeared to be. This was also super shocking to those shipping Wednesday and Tyler!

As explained in the show, Hydes are mutants with dual personalities. Their more sinister, monstrous nature stays dormant until a traumatic event or a chemical inducement unlocks it.

In Tyler’s case, he gets his mutant Hyde genes from his mother, who also had an untimely death because she was a Hyde. Miss Thorne takes advantage of this and activates Tyler’s dormant Hyde personality using a chemical potion.

When activated, Hydes form a servitude bond with their liberator and will do whatever is commanded of them. This is why Tyler inexplicably betrays Wednesday and develops a hatred for outcasts. Sadly, this results in a lot of bloodshed and treachery.

Miss Thornhill Is Wednesday S1’s Main Villain

Miss Thornhill/Laurel Gates

Wednesday S1’s backstory concerns two things: Gomez Addams’ alleged homicide of Garrett Gates and Jericho’s history of hatred against the outcasts, spearheaded by Joseph Crackstone in the 17th century.

Miss Thornhill is at the center of both these incidences. Turns out, she’s actually Laurel Gates, the surviving sister of Garrett Gates!

Wednesday finds out that on the night of Garrett’s death, he was actually sent out to poison all of Nevermore’s students. This is because all his family members were fanatic pilgrims who wanted to put an end to the outcasts once and for all.

Then, during his physical fight with Gomez, Garrett accidentally breaks the bottle of poison and gets infected by it, which is what kills him first. Despite this, Lauren blames the Addams for her brother’s death and plots her revenge.

Lauren is also a pilgrim, and she planted herself in Nevermore to carry out her family’s plan again. She does this by first activating Tyler’s Hyde form and convincing him to commit the murders.

The murders scare the common folk, cause chaos in Nevermore, and fuel the prejudice against the outcasts. But the bigger reason is that through Tyler/Herd’s murders, Lauren is trying to harvest organs for a spell that will resurrect Joseph Crackstone. This version of Crackstone will be supernaturally strong and will be able to use his powers to destroy Nevermore and its outcast students.

It takes great effort and sacrifice, but in the end, the valiant Wednesday and her Evermore peers save the day, killing Crackstone and Laurel. On the other hand, Tyler gets arrested in a straightjacket, leaving enough room for his villainous return.
