Everything to Know About the All-Mother Eywa in the Avatar Universe

The first Avatar film came out in 2009 and introduced us to a whole new world of Pandora and the Na’vi. James Cameron set out to build a universe with several new aspects, such as the people, the belief systems, the principles, the conflicts, and more.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this universe was the All-Mother Eywa. She was mentioned multiple times in the film, and we even saw glimpses of her. However, considering that it was a long time ago, you might have forgotten her integral role in the lives of the Na’vi clans.

With Avatar 2: The Way of Water just a couple of months away, here’s a quick recap that tells you everything you need to know about the All-Mother Eywa.

The All-Mother or Great Mother Eywa is Pandora’s life force and deity. The Na’vi tribes worship this energy which seems to be present in everything they see around them—trees, water, mountains, and essentially all creations.

The Na’vi believe that their world is one of equilibrium where Eywa is the balance keeper. Everything, including themselves, is created by her energy. Once they die, their soul returns to Eywa in the form of energy, and it emerges into the world as something else.

However, Eywa is not someone who tries to bring calamities or other forces to establish life balance. She is merely a guiding force that helps living creatures lead a good life.

Although Eywa is considered to exist in everything the Na’vi see around them, they don’t worship those entities specifically. For instance, they don’t worship the mountains or the seas. However, they do hold some facets of nature more sacred than others.

One such example is the Tree of Souls. The Na’vi believe that as living creatures, they have two parts. One is the husk or the outer body, and the other is the soul. The tree of souls acts as an abode for the souls which want to permeate from Pandora to the energy form of Eywa.

Besides this, the Na’vi are also capable of forming connections with Eywa. We see this in the film, where numerous beings sit around in circles and hold each other’s hands. Thus they build a collective consciousness that, in turn, connects with the force of Eywa.

In the Avatar 2 trailer, we saw Jake, Neytiri, and their kids search for new places to inhabit and build a home for themselves. This could mean they would be away from their Tree of Souls and Tree of Voices present in the homeland.

Seeing this detachment from such a profound medium of guiding force would be fascinating. Besides, I’m curious to know how crucial this absence is.

About Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water is an upcoming American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is the second film in Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following Avatar (2009).

Cameron produces with Jon Landau. Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.

Avatar 2 revolves around a universal concept of family and follows Jake Sully and Neytiri 14 years after the first film as they focus on protecting their child. However, they are forced to leave their home and explore the different regions of Pandora when an old threat returns to finish what they started. Jake has never faced a bigger challenge.
