In the T.V. series “House, M.D.,” the identity of House’s biological father was not revealed. House often speculates about his father throughout the series, but no definitive answer is provided. House has a strained relationship with his mother, Blythe House, and she frequently appears in the series.
As per the DNA Tests, neither John House nor Thomas Bell were revealed to be the biological fathers. However, all the evidence and speculations make it evident that John Wilson was House’s father.
However, his father’s absence is a recurring theme, and his father is portrayed as absent from his life. The show focuses more on House’s relationship with his colleagues, patients, and struggles rather than exploring his father’s identity.
1. Is John House the father?
In the later seasons of the series “House, M.D.,” it is revealed that House’s biological father is John House. However, in the episode “Birthmarks,” House discovers that John is not his biological father after ordering a DNA test.
House loves his mother but hates his father, whom he claims has an “insane moral compass,” and deliberately attempts to avoid both parents. It’s implied that this meant that John rarely bent the truth to comfort his son and usually found fault with what Gregory did despite his usually excellent academic accomplishments.
Gregory feared his father’s punishments, given even for minor offenses. They were far better suited for Marine recruits than a talented young boy. In the Episode One Day, One Room, House admits that his father abused him by making him sleep in the yard or bathe on ice whenever he misbehaved.
Gregory also noted that his father got along with peers and superiors but made no effort to get along with subordinates, including his son. House also felt that John cared more about his job than his relationships.
At one point (episode “One Day, One Room”), House tells a story of his parents leaving him with his grandmother, whose punishments constituted abuse. However, he later confesses it was his father who abused him.
The relationship was further strained when the prematurely bright Gregory suspected at 12 that John was not his biological father. John was away from home when Gregory was supposed to have been conceived. His father’s second toe is longer than his big toe, while Gregory’s is not (a genetic trait).
Gregory also shares with a family friend a birthmark in the exact location. Gregory confronted his father about it, but he responded by not speaking to him for an entire summer. Gregory confirmed his suspicions after his father’s death by obtaining a DNA sample and performing a paternity test.
This suspicion has affected his views on relationships ever since. Actor R. Lee Ermey portrays John House in a season 5 episode called “Birthmarks.”
In this episode, House discovers that his father had an affair, and he confronts his mother about it. The revelation about his father plays a significant role in House’s character development and understanding of his identity.
House unwillingly attends John’s funeral in “Birthmarks” and gives a short unflattering eulogy.
2. Who is Thomas Bell?
Thomas Bell is Gregory House’s new stepfather. Bell was an unseen and otherwise unnamed character, whom House believed, at 12, to be his biological father. He was finally seen and introduced by name in the Season 8-episode ‘Love is Blind’.
Bell, a Unitarian minister, and close family friend, shares a birthmark with House. House was so sure of the relationship that he challenged his father about it the summer after Gregory turned 12. John didn’t deny it but stopped speaking to Gregory for three months.
Eventually, House confronts his mother and Bell about his paternity, and Blythe has to reveal the truth to them. However, it appears that Bell was unaware that he was House’s father and is rather upset that the “pill-popping, lunatic, sociopath” is his son. However, they soon reconcile, and both men come to common terms over their love and respect for House’s mother.
However, a second DNA test was performed in the episode “Love is Blind” and House finally discovers that Thomas Bell was not his father either.
The identity of his birth father remains unknown.
Gregory was somewhat estranged from his father. His behavior around his father was different from his behavior around everyone else. Around his father, Gregory was quiet, reserved, and polite.
Part of this may be more of an effort to avoid upsetting his mother. Gregory usually does everything he can to avoid being with his father, including skipping family events and making excuses to be elsewhere when his father is nearby.
3. Who is the most likely father?
As far as I remember, during Season 5 Episode 4 (funeral of his “dad”), House claimed that his bio-dad was somebody other than the one he grew up with. In the end, he confirms to Wilson that his suspicions are correct. He has the test results.
However, at the very last minute, House says my dad’s dead and walks out of his office without the expression you’d expect from somebody who just said those words. Wilson thinks it’s weird to say that but assumes House finally accepts his feelings.
I believe he faked the results. John House is the father.
House has a history of lying about this and providing paper “evidence” to sell it further as if nobody would believe his words alone.
4. About House
House, M.D. is an American medical drama television series that originally ran on the Fox network for eight seasons, from November 16, 2004, to May 21, 2012.
The series’ main character is Dr. Gregory House, an unconventional, misanthropic medical genius who, despite his dependence on pain medication, leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH) in New Jersey. The series’ premise originated with Paul Attanasio, while David Shore, credited as the creator, was primarily responsible for the conception of the title character.
It was filmed mainly in a neighborhood and business district in Los Angeles County’s Westside called Century City. The show received high critical acclaim and was consistently one of the United States highest-rated series.
