Dream. Adventure. Friendship. These are some of the most important fundamentals of One Piece. Eiichiro Oda’s storytelling is applauded globally, but what the fans appreciate most about One Piece is the mysteries that come along with foreshadowing and easter eggs.
It has gotten so bad that fans don’t hesitate to analyze the sodium content in a drop of sweat. And it’s understandable; who doesn’t like being rewarded after following a manga for two and a half decades?
One of such mysteries is the identity of Luffy’s mother. If you are a loyal One Piece fan, you already know the endless theories doing rounds in the forums and posts across the internet. But for those who don’t, I’ll be talking about some of the most discussed theories, from Crocodile being Luffy’s mother to Bonney and Luffy having the same mother but different fathers.
If that piques your interest, let’s dive right into these theories.
1. The Crocomom Theory: Is Crocodile Luffy’s Mother?
As ridiculous as it may sound, The Crocomom Theory suggests that Crocodile is Luffy’s biological mother. But how can that be? Isn’t he the cold-blooded Warlord who almost killed Luffy in Alabasta?
Well, yes. However certain events and encounters suggest that the former Warlord might be Luffy’s mother. Let’s talk about these events in detail.
1.1. The Secret Between Crocodile & Ivankov
Ivankov uses the Horu Hotu no Mi, or Horm Horm Fruit, a Paramecia Type Devil Fruit, which allows Ivankov to alter the human body with various hormones.
In chapter 540 of One Piece, when Luffy rejects Crocodile’s offer to help them out of Impel Down in exchange for releasing him, Ivankov insists on taking Crocodile with them. But mentions about a secret of the Warlord that wouldn’t be a secret if he betrays them. And Crocodile didn’t seem to be very pleased with the threat.
That said, Emporio Ivankov’s introductory chapter makes this theory even stronger.
After turning a pirate into a woman, Ivankov tells the pirate that his father wanted to be a woman and adds that there’s no problem in being a daughter with two mothers. (One Piece Chapter 537)
So, two fathers, Dragon and Crocodile, and a son, Luffy! This doesn’t sound like just another fan theory, does it?
1.2. Mystery Surrounding Crocodile’s Gender
If the above points don’t appeal to you, here is more evidence supporting the Crocomom theory.
In the special One Shot titled One Piece Strong World (Volume 0), which shows the event 20 years before Luffy set out on an adventure, you will find that during Roger’s execution, faces of pirates like Moria, Doflamingo, Buggy are shown, except that of Crocodile.
There’s more to it; the hairstyle, the cigar, and the earrings match the image of the female Crocodile Oda drawn in an SBS Volume.
In One Piece Chapter 1086, amongst the other Seraphims, the feminine-looking Seraphim beside Hancock’s on the far left is believed to be Crocodile’s clone.
In SBS Volume 63, Oda drew the Warlords as kids. In the illustration, the Crocodile is androgynous and tomboyish.
So, it’s not just the fans who claim Crocodile is a woman. Oda has dropped hints everywhere in the manga, special one-shots, and even in the SBS volumes, making this theory more credible.
2. Did Oda already reveal Luffy’s Mother?
One Piece Chapter 1057 included a special titled “Where The Wind Blows” that showed Shanks and crewmates in a Childcare meeting trying to put Uta to sleep. In the special, a mysterious woman sings a lullaby to her baby. At the same time, Shanks and crewmates dance to it. It is speculated that the baby is Luffy, and the mysterious woman is his real mother.
From the movie One Piece Film: Red, you already know that Uta and Luffy are childhood friends. Foosha Village in East Blue is not only Luffy’s hometown but also Shank’s rest stop. So, if you connect all the dots, you will also find this theory reasonable.
3. Is Luffy’s Mom one of the Former Empress of Amazon Lily?
Pre-Timeskip, when Luffy and his crewmates were overpowered by Kizaru and Pacifistas and almost at death’s door, it was Bartholomew Kuma who saved the Straw Hats by sending each of them to a location where they could hone their respective skills.
The only location that doesn’t make sense is Amazon Lily. Let’s go through some facts. Bartholomew Kuma is an officer and one of the founders of the Revolutionary Army, besides being a former warlord. So, Kuma being asked to send Luffy to Amazon Lily by Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, shouldn’t be left out of the equation. Also, because Dragon is Luffy’s father.
You might argue that Kuma sent him there knowing Rayleigh could teach Luffy the fundamentals of Haki in peace, but why Amazon Lily? Why not any other, more secluded island?
The answer to all this might be that Luffy’s mother was one of the former Empresses of Amazon Lily. Gloriosa, one of the former Empresses, mentioned that several Empresses suffered from lovesickness; some even died, while others, like Shakuyaku, escaped to the outside world with their loved ones.
So, Luffy’s mother might very well be an Empress who fell in love with Dragon and decided to leave the island with him. Among all the theories, this has to be the strongest contender.
4. Is Ginny Luffy’s Mother? Are Bonney & Luffy Siblings?
In One Piece Chapter 1095, Bonney’s mother, Ginny, is introduced as one of the slaves alongside Ivankov. However, what caught everyone’s attention was the uncanny similarity between Ginny and Luffy’s way of smiling through disasters and their love for meat, so much so that they carry it everywhere. Not to forget those round eyes.
But saying that Ginny conceived Bonney with Kuma and Luffy with Dragon is way too ridiculous, considering how Oda doesn’t even intend to introduce Luffy’s mom in this story. Why would he go to such lengths with such unnecessary complications?
5. Will Oda ever introduce Luffy’s Mom?
In an SBS volume, Oda mentioned that he has no intention of introducing Luffy’s mom to his story of becoming the King of the Pirates. He said Luffy’s adventure began when he left his mother’s arms.
But what he added next became a topic of controversy. He said, “Mother is the opposite of adventure.” While this may be interpreted negatively, it can also mean that a mother is always protective of her child, regardless of age or circumstance.
Ultimately, it’s up to Oda whether he decides to reveal the true identity of Luffy’s mother or just sit back and laugh at us for all the ridiculous theories we, as One-Piece fans, are coming up with.
That said. Who do you think is Luffy’s real mother and which theory does your speculations align with the most? Let me know in the comment section.
