Avatar: The Way of Water introduces us to a plethora of new characters, including Kiri, a teenage Na’vi girl, who is the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri. But the mystery behind her birth is an interesting and complicated one.
Kiri is the daughter of scientist Grace from the first film. But we do not know for sure who Kiri’s father is, as the film does not make it clear. We can make several guesses about it based on the hints in the film.
For instance, where does Kiri get her strange powers from? How exactly was she born—was it asexual reproduction, or did someone impregnate Grace before? All of this remains unanswered, though there’s no harm in speculating.
As of now, we know that Kiri is the daughter of scientist Grace, born out of her Na’vi avatar after her death. Her other parent could be Eywa herself, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
Here’s what we can infer from what we already know.
How was Kiri born?
Kiri was born out of scientist Grace’s Na’vi avatar after her death in the first film. After Grace died, she left her Na’vi avatar behind, which was preserved in stasis by Jake and Neytiri. Kiri was born out of this avatar.
According to Jake, Kiri’s birth was a “total mystery”. As of now, there have been no hints that point toward the fact that the Na’vi can reproduce asexually. Even if they can, it is strange that one can give birth even after death.
In other words, we have to assume that someone had impregnated Grace before her death. She was pregnant when she died, but since Jake kept her Na’vi avatar in stasis, the child survived. The film does not make it clear whether Grace was ready to give birth when she died or if the baby completed the gestation period within her avatar.
Basically, all of this is pretty weird. The film also keeps us in the darkness about Kiri’s father. However, the film does give us a few hints to work with, which is exactly what we’ll be doing now.
Who is Kiri’s father in Avatar: The Way of Water?
Avatar: The Way of Water does not confirm who Kiri’s father is. Kiri’s other parent could be the Pandora God, Eywa herself, another male human, or even a Na’vi.
Kiri’s brothers keep joking that scientist Norm is Kiri’s father, but there’s nothing that suggests so. I think Kiri isn’t exactly a conventional child, and her other parent may not be a human or a Na’vi at all.
If we notice, Kiri has quite a few special aspects to her. She is able to sense the Great Mother or Eywa, who is the main deity of the Na’vi. She also has the unconscious ability to draw sacred wood spirits toward herself. When Kiri sleeps, the grass moves in time along with her breath.
She’s the only one who has such powers in her family, which makes her special. Her origin separates her from her adoptive family. These special powers are surely stemming from her mysterious parentage. We know that scientist Grace had no such special powers, so it has to be the other parent.
Perhaps, Kiri does not have a father. She might be a product of asexual reproduction, and her other parent could be none other than the goddess Eywa herself. In the first film, Grace mentioned to Jake that she could see Eywa before she died.
This means that Grace could be connected to the neural network that all the Na’vi people share. It can also explain how she appeared before Kiri when she connected herself to the Tree of Souls.
Eywa could have sensed Grace when she connected herself to the neural network that she had left behind a Na’vi body. Eywa is the deity of life, she could easily have used her spirits to put growing life inside Grace’s body, which ultimately gave birth to Kiri.
To make it simple, Kiri has the spirit and powers of Eywa herself within her, and she’ll have a bigger role to play in this story. Hopefully, Eywa will soon claim her potential daughter, and we’ll get the big reveal in Avatar 3. Until then, we can only speculate!
