Jinwoo’s dad is Sung Il-Hwan, Korea’s first S-Rank Hunter. Before being a hunter, he was a firefighter.

Once the gates started appearing, Sung Il-Hwan switched to being a hunter and rose to the ranks to provide for his family, which consisted of his lover, Park Kyung-Hye, with whom he had Jinwoo and Jinnah.

Unfortunately, there was no hunters’ association then, so he was never compensated for his tedious work in the dungeons.

Sung Il-Hwan disappeared ten years before the current storyline of Solo Leveling as he got trapped in a dungeon during a raid. Since no human can survive there for a prolonged period, his family assumed that he had died.

However, in reality, Il-Hwan was saved by the rulers, who found him on the brink of death due to starvation and dehydration—sort of like how the architect’s System had saved Jinwoo.

Like Jinwoo, he became a rulers vessel, imbued with powers and abilities. The Rulers gave him the goal of taking down the soon-to-be-born New Shadow Monarch, and Il-Hwan had to agree to survive.

Sung Il-Hwan will reunite with Jinwoo in the Monarch War Arc, as he has returned to the human world to eliminate the new Shadow Monarch.

The Rulers sent Il-Hwan to Earth using a portal that opened in America. Despite being missing for ten years, he wasn’t greeted warmly by a group of A-rank hunters who assumed that, due to his beastly appearance, he was a monster from the dungeon.

Il-Hwan easily defeated those A-rank hunters but was later arrested by the Federal Bureau of Hunters. The Bureau sent Hwang Dongsoo for interrogation because no human had come out of a dungeon. Due to his appearance and poor English, they suspected him to be a beast.

Hwang Dongsoo, being the hothead he is, handled the interrogation brashly, and Il-Hwan sensed his bloodlust for Jinwoo.

They ended up having an intense fistfight where Il-Hwan injured Dongsoo (an S-rank hunter) to the point where he needed months to recover.

Il-Hwan made the shocking discovery that the Shadow Monarch he had to assassinate was his very own son. He couldn’t kill his flesh.

Fortunately for him, the Rulers decided to change their goal once they realized that Jinwoo was an ally after he had killed Legia, the Monarch of the beginning.

Sung Il-Hwan dies once as a true father who protected his son Jinwoo in Monarchs War Arc, where he burned to a crisp. However, he is revived later by Jinwoo, who creates another timeline with the help of the Cup of Reincarnation in the Epilogue.

In the original timeline, Il-Hwan steps in when Querehsha, monarch of Plagues, and Rakan, monarch of Fangs, are about to kill Jinwoo. He kicks Rakan’s face like a football and sends him flying into Sillad, the monarch of Frost, crashing through multiple buildings.

With the intensity of the battle gaining momentum, Il-Hwan could overpower the three monarchs despite being outnumbered. In the final attempt to take down Il-Hwan, Sillad created a massive ice storm that cut Il-Hwan’s arm.

Sillad then created an enormous ice meteorite that crushed Jinwoo and Il-Hwan like cockroaches, but Beru stepped in and shattered it. From then on, Jinwoo took over to battle the monarchs while Il-Hwan fled for shelter.

Il-Hwan realized that he had used his powers to the limit, and his body couldn’t withstand them, so he slowly began disintegrating.

Jinwoo made it in time and reunited with his father, and that’s when Il-Hwan recounted his tale of his disappearance until he turned into light and scattered.

In the Epilogue, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation to produce a timeline in which humans never enter the dungeons. This reveres Il-Hwan’s role as a hunter, and he remains a firefighter. In this manner, Jinwoo revived his father.
