1. Who is Hwang Dongsoo in Solo Leveling?

Hwang Dongsoo is an S-rank hunter from South Korea, a minor antagonist of the series, and plans on seeking vengeance against Sung Jinwoo, for which he returns to South Korea.

Hwang Dongsoo is a power thirsty traitor of South Korea as he flocked to America when he was offered an upgrade by Norma Selner. He joined a scavenger guild under Thomas Andre and became a formidable hunter there. 

Even though his elder brother and his nation criticized him, he turned a deaf ear to them as he valued his status and rank over petty morals and loyalty.

2. Who is Hwang Dongsoo’s brother?

Hwang Dongsoo’s elder brother is Hwang Dongsuk, a C-rank hunter killed in the dungeons for attempting to murder and loot naive hunters.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, just like his younger brother, Hwang Dongsuk, an arrogant and cunning man with no value for human life. 

He was a lizard, a term for hunters who commit crimes in dungeons. These hunters murder weaklings to earn easy cash and leave them to die, just as a lizard leaves its tail behind to save itself. 

3. Why is Hwang Dongsoo after Sung Jinwoo?

Hwang Dongsoo is after Sung Jinwoo as he killed his elder brother, Hwang Dongsuk, in the dungeon. Jinwoo killed his elder brother as he was the only one who made it alive from the raid along with Yoo Jinho. 

In the “Dungeons and Lizards Arc,” Sung Jonwoo and Yoo Jinho were part of the Hwang Dongsuk and other Lizard groups to raid the dungeon. However, Dongsuk had evil schemes of betraying and killing them to make fast cash and loot their crystals. 

Once the team reached the Boss chamber, Dongsuk ordered Jinwoo and Jinho to be trapped. The situation turned grim when the explosion awoke the Boss of the Dungeon. 

However, Jinwoo mustered up his courage and defeated the Boss. The system then gave Jinwoo a quest to eliminate Hwang Dongsuk’s team. 

With the best possible option being to obey the order, Jinwoo murdered Donsuk and his team before they could kill and loot him and Jinho. This incident infused animosity in Dongsoo, which drove him to return to South Korea to seek revenge against Jinwoo.

Upon arriving, Jinwoo was engaged with the Red Gate; he assumed that Jinwoo would probably die out there, so he left for America the next day.

4. Will Jinwoo defeat Dongsoo?

Jinwoo will defeat Dongsoo in the “International Guild Conference Arc,” where Dongsoo abducts Jinho to lure Jinwoo out to defeat him. Little does he know that Jinwoo is more formidable than imagined; his conceit has clouded his judgment. 

Jinwoo can track Jinho with the help of his shadow soldiers and teleport to the abandoned area using Shadow exchange. There, they engage in a duel but are interrupted by Thomas Andre.

The duel shifts tension toward Thomas, who demands Dongsoo be freed. However, Jinwoo, fueled by rage, defeats Thomas, kills Dongsoo, and collects his shadow, Greed. 

Although Jinwoo doesn’t have the motive to kill Dongsoo, he is driven by his humane selfishness and wrath as Dongsoo tortures Jinho to the gates of death. 

This makes Jinwoo a relatable MC. He isn’t the typical angelic hero who always tries to do heroic things; he does something any human would do for their friend in the heat of the moment.
