House of the Dragon Episode 2 ended with two very important developments—the introduction of a major villain, Crab Feeder, and Viserys announcing his marriage to Alicent Hightower. These developments further complicate matters within the Targaryen family.
The ending raises several questions and there’s much to discuss. But to sum it up, things are getting further complicated within House Targaryen, we will see many more dragons soon, and nobody really likes anyone, just as it was in Game of Thrones.
Here’s everything about the episode’s ambiguous ending that you need to know.
Who is Crab Feeder? House of the Dragon’s Major Villain Explained
Episode 2 of House of the Dragon ended with the first glimpse of a new character called Crab Feeder. Though he was briefly mentioned in Episode 1 when Lord Corlys talked about the situation in Stepstones, we see him on the screen for the first time in Episode 2.
The Crab Feeder has been feeding the bodies of Westerosi sailors to crabs and intents to capture Stepstones, an important area for trade and finance. He is the first major antagonist of the series.
Crab Feeder’s real name is Craghas Drahar. He always wears a mask which covers certain burnt areas of his face and body. We see him exactly this way in the introduction scene at the end of Episode 2.
Crab Feeder calls himself Prince Admiral of the Triarchy and intends to conquer Stepstones. Since the Stepstones is an important area for trade and finance of the Crown, this concerns Lord Corlys Velaryon. It even starts affecting his personal wealth.
The Crab Feeder will be a major hurdle for Daemon Targaryen. He must be destroyed by the prince soon with the help of Lord Corlys before the huge time jump of Season 1.
What is the plan of Daemon and Lord Corys Velaryon?
Daemon Targaryen and Lord Corlys team up towards the end of the episode to defeat Crab Feeder. Corlys convinces Daemon by saying that both of them have something in common, that they’re “second sons” of the realm.
In other words, nothing is given to them and no place exists for them by virtue. They have to take what they want and make their own place in the realm. Corlys’ motive behind doing this on paper seems like it has got to do with his wealth.
Crab Feeder taking over Stepstones has begun hampering his own personal wealth. Although Corlys tried to convince the King to take action against the Crab Feeder, he did not pay much heed as he wanted to avoid war at any cost.
Moreover, Viserys choosing Alicent Hightower as his new wife instead of Corlys’ own daughter Lady Laena angered him more. As a result, he decided to team up with Daemon and seek his help in defeating the Crab Feeder.
Daemon and Corlys have teamed up to defeat the Crab Feeder for now. However, Corlys does hint at his displeasure towards the King. So, we can assume that he might help Daemon in his quest for the Iron Throne in the future.
Daemon saw the opportunity to tackle Crab Feeder as a chance to prove himself worthy to the people of Westeros. This might strengthen his claim to the throne over Princess Rhaenyra as well. So, he joined hands with Corlys to tackle Crab Feeder.
Viserys and Alicent Hightower’s Marriage
Episode 2 ends with King Viserys declaring to the small council that he has decided to marry Lady Alicent Hightower, the daughter of the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower.
Viserys choosing Alicent as his Queen had several implications. It angered Lord Corlys and Rhaenys as the King rejected their proposal of marriage to their daughter Laena. It also angered Rhaenyra as Alicent is her best friend.
However, this was a careful plan designed by Otto Hightower. He wanted the King to choose Alicent as his next Queen and began sending her to look in on the King shortly after the death of Queen Aemma. The King was pleased by Alicent’s kind and caring nature.
Moreover, the King was not willing to marry Lady Laena as she was only 12 years old. Alicent is of marriageable age and also has a good relationship with the King now. In fact, it is clear that this was Otto Hightower’s plan from the beginning.
This news terribly upset Rhaenyra. Although she herself consented to her father remarrying, she probably did not expect the Queen to be her best friend. It also came as a shock to her as neither her father nor her best friend mentioned to her anything about their private meetings. It would take a while for her to adjust to the news.
