Celebrimbor is a character that appeared in Episode 2 of The Rings of Power. Although his role was brief, his significance in the show and the LOTR lore is unparalleled. If you’ve read the books, you’ll know about him and even the hammer he shows Elrond.
But, if you haven’t and want to know more about this character, you’ve arrived at the right place. So, who is Celebrimbor? Why is he important in The Rings of Power? Let’s find out.
Celebrimbor is the forger of the Rings of Power. These include seven rings for the dwarf lords, nine for the Kings of men, and three for Galadriel, Gil-Galad, and Círdan. Sauron secretly forged one ring to rule them all.
In the Second Age, Sauron had disguised himself as Annatar. He took an Elven form and proclaimed that he was a messenger of the Valar. This was to bond with the elves, gain their confidence, and direct them to do his bidding.
He said that Valar wanted them to forge rings for the people of Middle-earth. So he gave them the knowledge and the skill to fulfill this task. Leading this enormous task was Celebrimbor.
At first, he forged 16 rings. This involved seven rings for the dwarven lords and nine rings for the kings of men. Since Sauron had taught Celebrimbor the magic and spells behind creating these rings, his influence resided within these rings. Each of these rings housed his dark powers and corrupt intentions.
From Celebrimbor, Sauron learned how to forge the one ring to rule all these other rings, and thus Sauron got the title of the Lord of the Rings. But it wasn’t as simple as he thought it would be.
Celebrimbor finds out about Sauron’s true identity and intentions. He realizes that he has created weapons of corruption, darkness, and destruction. So, he forges three more rings, but he doesn’t use Sauron’s influence this time.
He creates Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. Narya is the Ring of Fire, Nenya is the Ring of Water, and Vilya is the Ring of Air. The only problem was that these were made by the knowledge provided by Sauron, and hence the Dark Lord still had an influence on them.
When Sauron finds out that Celebrimbor had created these three rings, he goes to the elven region, Eregion, and lays waste to the entire place. But before he could get hold of the elf, Celebrimbor hides these three rings by giving them to Galadriel, Círdan, and Gil-Galad.
Sauron does manage to capture Celebrimbor and tortures him for the whereabouts of these three rings. But Celebrimbor never tells him. In the end, the elf responsible for the Rings of Power is killed, hung on a pole, and showcased as a banner by the Dark Lord.
Narya was first wielded by Círdan, who passed it on to Gandalf. Nenya was wielded by Galadriel, and Vilya was passed on from Gil-Galad to Elrond, who wielded it till the end of the third age.
This is why Celebrimbor is so important to the story. In Episode 2, he also talks about the greatest forge that will ever be built, and this will likely be the forge where the Rings of Power are created.
