Ashborn was the strongest Ruler, the Greatest Fragment of Light, to exist in the solo Leveling universe. He was loyal to the absolute being of their universe and fought at his behest with the monarchs.

His story takes place eons before the current story timeline, when only two forces existed and clashed in chaos: Rulers, who were the embodiment of light, and Monarchs, who were the embodiment of utter darkness.

Their absolute being did nothing to stop the chaos, as he pretended it was best to maintain the power balance in their universe. However, he was a cunning being who took pleasure in watching the War against the Rulers and the Monarchs; it was sheer entertainment for him.

Ashborn knew this dark secret about the absolute being, but his loyalty swore him to be shunned. The tables were turned when the Rulers and Monarchs discovered this secret about their cunning god.

They decided to defeat him. However, Ashborn stood by his side and was eventually wounded by the Rulers to the point where he almost gave up. At the gates of death, he discovered that the absolute being had bestowed some formidable powers on him.

Ashborn returned to the battlefield to save the absolute being, but he was too late; their creator had been defeated. The Rulers then captured one of the strongest Monarchs, the Monarch of Beginning, Legia.

To maintain the power balance, Ashborn had no choice but to aid the Monarchs, where he displayed his overwhelming strength. This was unfathomable by rulers and monarchs.

Two Monarchs, Rakan and Baran, allied against him but in vain. Baran even lost his life. Witnessing this sheer strength, the rulers begged for forgiveness to Ashborn.

Ashborn wanted the rulers to kill him to end the War. However, the rulers wouldn’t comply, so they coerced him into hiding, where he grew his shadow army to seek revenge against Rakan.

Why did Ashborn choose Jinwoo as his successor?

Ashborn chose Jinwoo as his successor as he stood beyond the expectations Ashborn and the Architect held for hunters in the system.

Even though Jinwoo was a pathetic E-rank hunter in the double dungeon, he never gave up and defied death, which inspired Ashborn to pick Jinwoo as his successor.

Centuries after Ashborn fled to build his shadow army, the Monarchs made their move against humanity, and the Ruler began choosing human vessels, which we know as hunters.

Ashborn also decided to follow them to the human realm to find a human vessel to become his successor. He teamed up with a mage, Kandiaru, aka the Architect, to design a system to determine the best human successor. In exchange, Ashborn would grant Kandiaru immortality.

The Architect designed a system formatted like a game to test a person’s mental and physical battle prowess in strenuous situations and determine who would be best suited to succeed Ashborn.

After years of observing players, one hunter stood out to Ashborn: our protagonist, Sun Jinwoo, in the Double Dungeon. In the Double Dungeon, Jinwoo had been killed by the god statue however, he had been resuscitated by the Architect to fulfill Ashborn’s goal. Thus began Jinwoo’s training to become Ashborn’s successor; he cleared various levels in the system to grow and become strong enough to withhold Ashborn’s powers.

In the “Monarchs War Arc,” Ashborn finally transfused his powers onto Jinwoo, making him his successor, the formidable Shadow Monarch and the strongest warrior in the realm of Solo Leveling to put an end to the War between the Rulers and the Monarchs.
