Angroboda is the latest “Giant” addition to the God of War franchise via GoW Ragnarok, where she also serves as Atreus’ companion. Upon falling asleep, Atreus finds her in Ironwood. Moreover, in Norse mythology, she plays the role of a Jotun, Loki’s wife and the mother of all monsters.
Interestingly, Angroboda’s title as the mother of all monsters provides a slight glimpse into why she lives around a bunch of animals in Ironwood. Also, the fact that Atreus is led to Angroboda by a pack of wolves when he wakes up in his dream speaks volumes about the lengths Sony’s Santa Monica Studios has gone to in order to develop a mythological resemblance.
Furthermore, Atreus meets Angroboda for the first time towards the end of the fourth main mission, Groa’s Secret, and the beginning of the fifth main mission, The Lost Sanctuary.
Also, she appears to be of Atreus’ age when they come across each other, and they quickly become friends as Atreus is looking to extract a few answers.
Here’s more about Angroboda, the place where Atreus meets her (Ironwood), and if they end up with each other.
Angroboda’s Role in God of War Ragnarok
Players come across Angroboda for the first time in Ironwood, the ex-habitat of the Giants. In addition, it has been established that she’s a Giant herself. Plus, she’s aware of how the prophecies are reflected in the God of War series because her mother drew them in the first place.
Then, she reveals that Giants are skilled artisans, which explains why Atreus loves sketching and drawing.
As the God of War Ragnarok story progresses, Angroboda starts doubting her role in Atreus’ journey as she believes that her part was over when she revealed the prophecy to him. Nonetheless, you’ll find out that she eventually lets go of that belief and joins forces with Kratos and Atreus during the final battle.
If there’s ever a sequel to God of War Ragnarok, it’ll probably explore Atreus’ journey and his future with Angroboda.
Do Angroboda and Atreus end up together in God of War Ragnarok?
Once the battle of Ragnarok is over, Atreus decides to find his own path and save the lives of the remaining Jotnars. Subsequently, Atreus bids farewell to Kratos, embraces Angroboda, and sets out on a journey with her, meaning they do end up together in God of War Ragnarok.
When Angroboda and Atreus initially meet, she teaches him more about the life of Giants as they go around exploring Ironwood. Shortly after, she introduces him to a monumental task.
Angroboda possesses a collection of marbles, each comprising a Jotnar soul. Then, she informs Atreus that other Giants are out there and can be reawakened by giving them their souls back.
Fast forward to the scenes post-Ragnarok, Angroboda realizes that Atreus hasn’t told Kratos about his Giant visions. She also knew about the path he was about to set on. Moreover, Atreus knew deep down that it was time for him to say goodbye to his father, but he didn’t know how.
As a result, Angroboda makes the process much simpler by bringing Kratos into the scene and taking the father-son duo to a final Jotnar prophecy. This gesture is a precursor to how much she understood Atreus and the fact that she cared for him deeply.
Additionally, this theory leads you right back to Norse mythology, according to which, Angroboda and Atreus are bound by the sanctity of marriage, an institution built on the foundation of understanding and care.
What is Ironwood? How did Atreus end up there?
Ironwood is a mythical land covered with vivid forests in the realm of Jotunheim. Furthermore, it’s the region where the Jotuns, aka the Giants, used to live and prosper until they were doomed to extinction by Thor. Atreus ends up there when he falls asleep and wakes up in a dream towards the end of the fourth main quest in God of War Ragnarok, Groa’s Secret.
Just about when Groa’s Secret is about to conclude, Kratos and Atreus sit at the dinner table at Sindri’s house. This is followed by a cutscene that portrays Atreus storming off from the table as Kratos refuses to acknowledge the underlying meaning of the prophecy of the Champion and Loki.
Soon after, Atreus falls asleep and wakes up in a dream where he relives his worst memories. Subsequently, trembling with fear, he falls to the ground, turns around, and follows a particular figure that leads him to Ironwood.
