The Umbrella Academy has a penchant for first causing an apocalypse and then rushing in to save it. Now, there is reason to believe that it could be Abigail Hargreeves (a largely unexplored character) who has been responsible time and again for the end of the world.
In S3 Ep 9, see Abigail’s lifeless body being stored on the moon. Who is she? How is she connected to the Umbrella Academy?
Abigail Hargreeves is Reginald’s wife who died a long time ago. It is theorized that Reginald created the gifted children to use them to revive her back to life or alter her timeline so that she escapes death.
As entertaining as The Umbrella Academy is, it’s also deceptively clever. So if you haven’t connected the dots yet, let me explain it to you!
Introduction
We first meet Abigail in the S1 finale via a flashback that took place “long ago.” She appears lying on the bed, weak and weary, confirming that a terminal illness is eating her away and she won’t have long to live.
Here is also where we get the emotional scene of her asking Reginald to give her violin to someone who’d love playing it as much as she does. As we know, that violin is ultimately passed on to Viktor.
But perhaps the more important bit is that during this conversation, Reginald responds with, “I can’t leave you, there must be another way.” He then exits the room to scatter away glowing participles that will impregnate 43 women on October 1, 1989.
Foreshadowing
We don’t hear from or see Abigail after that until S3 Ep 9. What starts off as another flashback of lonely Luther on the moon, soon turns into foreshadowing. When Luther is exploring the lunar terrain, he realizes there are invisible barriers that keep him from crossing certain territories.
While he isn’t privy to what lies beyond those barriers, the audience is given a glimpse: An additional Hargreeves Enterprises base that houses the deceased body of Abigail Hargreeves in a cryo-chamber.
Resurrection
In the S3 finale, we finally learn two things: Hargreeves is an alien, and he had no intentions of using the Umbrella or the Sparrow academy to save the world. In fact, he created them for his own personal use.
This becomes extremely clear when after the Umbrella gang supposedly save the universe for the third time. They return to their “original” timeline but discover that they’ve lost all their powers.
As the camera pans towards the cityscape, we realize that Reginald is alive and thriving, and right next to him is his wife, Abigail. This has given rise to the theory that Reginald’s plan all along was to create children with superpowers who would cause an apocalypse and then defeat the sentinels at Hotel Oblivion, altering Abigail’s fate.
Of course, given that both the Hargreeves parents are aliens, there could be more at play. Expect more revelations in S4!
