After a successful run of three seasons, Baba Voss’ journey came to an incredible end in the See series finale. It was bittersweet, thoughtful, and epic in proportion. We had to say goodbye to some characters, and it was a fresh new beginning for others.
But whatever it was, the finale was in no way not satisfying. Every character got their deserving end and stood for what they believed in throughout the series. I would not say that it was unexpected, either. You could feel what’s coming up, considering how the last few episodes spanned out.
In the See series finale, Baba Voss sacrifices his life to protect his family. There are other major character deaths, and both Kofun and Haniwa get a new start. There’s also a glimpse of hope for a better world in the end.
But that’s not going into enough detail, right? Here’s everything that took place in the epic series finale and what you need to know about it.
1. Who dies in the See finale?
Baba Voss, Queen Sibeth Kane, and Tormada die in the See finale.
The series finale begins with Maghra and her children realizing that Baba Voss had already left to fight the combined forces of Sibeth and Tormada. Since Maghra understands that it is already too late to stop him, she focuses on protecting her children by coming out of the tunnel they were in.
Meanwhile, Baba Voss approaches the enemy army with Ranger’s help. While he is fighting them, Maghra manages to escape the bombing, comes out of the tunnel, and kills Sibeth. Though both Sibeth and Tormada die, their enemy army was still very much intact.
At this point, Baba knows what he has to do. He cuts his way to the bombs and causes them to explode, giving up his life in the process. The bombing kills all the enemy soldiers and ends the battle. However, Baba Voss, too, dies to protect his family and loved ones. His last words addressing Maghra are, “I see you.”
After Maghra escapes the tunnel, she approaches Queen Sibeth, who is also her elder sister. She pleads with Sibeth to speak to her once. This causes Sibeth to melt, and she embraces her sister despite the bitter enmity between them.
Sibeth is however still mad at Maghra for betraying her and says that she has to kill her. Little did she know that Maghra too had the same ambition.
Though Sibeth thinks that she won, Maghra manages to get hold of the tiny knife that Queen Kane always kept under her skin. Sibeth meets her end as Maghra stabs her sister with the knife.
Tormada dies at the hands of Ranger, who finally manages to take revenge for all the pain and torture that he put him through. As he fights Ranger, one of Tormada’s own grenades blows up, bursting him to pieces.
2. Kofun’s Decision to Become Blind
In the finale, Kofun gives up his ability to see to be a better King to the people of Paya and a better father to his son, Wolffe.
Kofun and Haniwa both grew up with Baba Voss and Maghra. However, while Haniwa was pretty comfortable and proud of her ability to see, Kofun was always uncomfortable with it. Kofun always felt alienated from the rest of the people because of his eyesight.
In the end, Maghra makes it clear that she wants Kofun to succeed her as the ruler of Paya. Since the people of Paya cannot see, Kofun feels that he would be able to govern them better if he becomes one of them. He decides to give up his eyesight in order to not be alienated from his people. Apart from that, he also wants to belong to the same world as his son, Wolffe, who was also blind.
Although Baba’s sacrifice leads to peace with the Trivantians, they blame the sighted people for Tormada’s misadventures. They also decide to outlaw sight in their empire and ask Paya to implement the same.
Naturally, Maghra does not agree to such a proposal. But a tentative treaty is still signed between the two parties. This decision is also the catalyst behind Kofun’s decision to give up his sight as it would ensure peace.
It is not clear how Kofun gives up his eyesight and his life afterward, but we see him experience the last sunrise before the world goes dark for him.
3. What happens to Haniwa and Wren?
Haniwa had always had different views from Kofun regarding eyesight. She has always been pretty comfortable with her ability to see. Rather than being able to belong, she always wanted to explore the world and discover more about humanity’s past.
Earlier this season, when Haniwa parted ways with Sheva, he informed her about other secret libraries, such as the one at the House of Enlightenment. After Haniwa and Wren’s wedding in the finale, Charlotte returns to Pennsa and gives Haniwa the map that Sheva gave her.
After this, Haniwa and Wren leave Pennsa without the knowledge of their family, promising themselves that they will return someday. They leave in search of sighted people like themselves. (Yes, it’s a lot like how Arya Stark went off on a voyage to discover what’s West of Westeros in the Game of Thrones finale.)
The map leads the two of them to what seems to be the New York Public Library. Although the city is now in ruins, the library is still operational. Once Haniwa and Wren walk in, they see sighted people like them in the great hall, working on different things.
Haniwa realizes that these are people like her, and she is finally home. Moreover, this is a clear hint that sight is returning to the world and the world is healing. This way, the series ends on a bittersweet note, leaving hope for a better world.
