After more than a decade, Avatar has opened up the second chapter in its story with the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. This film has a lot of conflicts—the return of old villains like Quaritch, the introduction of the Metkayina, who are wary of Jake and his family, and tulkun poachers, to name a few.
Unsurprisingly, these storylines result in quite a few casualties. So, which main characters do not make it out alive in Avatar: The Way of Water?
The main characters who die in Avatar: The Way of Water are Neteyem and Scoresby. Besides them, many unnamed characters, like members of the Metkayina tribe, tulkun hunters, and RDA soldiers, also die in the movie as a consequence of all the various conflicts.
Let’s look into these deaths in more detail:
How does Neteyam die?
Neteyem dies in Avatar: The Way of Water as a result of being shot by the RDA soldiers.
In the sequel, we’re introduced to the Sullys’ children, Neteyem being the oldest of the lot. We all knew that the movie will have at least one major death, and sadly, the braveheart Neteyam is one of them.
Neteyam is shot while trying to rescue his siblings from Quaritch. Although he manages to save them and get them to safety, he ultimately succumbs to his wounds and dies with his family around him.
How does Scoresby die?
The leader of the tulkun hunters, Scoresby, dies in Avatar: The Way of the Way. He gets attacked by Payakan, a tulkun who attacks Scoresby and his hunters on their boat, killing them in the process.
The sheer amount of casualties caused by Scoresby and his tulkun hunters makes us all hope that revenge is exacted on him by the end of the movie. Thankfully, this does come true as he is killed by Payakan, a tulkun who allows himself to be caught in Scoresby’s snares.
After pretending to get trapped, Payakan jolts the boat, ensuring that Scoresby’s arm gets jammed in the boat’s hull. The attack saws off the hunter’s arm, and he falls into the sea, drowning.
Quaritch’s Avatar Team
The Avatars working for Quaritch get killed in Avatar: The Way of Water. Most of them die in combat or/and drown when Quaritch’s ship sinks at the end of the film.
Quaritch returns as one of the sequel’s primary antagonists and even survives at the movie’s end. Sadly, it is his team of avatars that gets the punishment he deserves and perishes as a result.
His team was made up of Lyle Wainfleet, Alexander, Zhang, Prager, Walker, Mansk, Sean Fike, Zdinarsk, Brown, and Lopez.
Do Jake and Neytiri die?
No, Jake and Neytiri do not die in Avatar: The Way of Water. At the end of the film, they are trapped on Quaritch’s sinking ship. However, they’re rescued in time by Lo’ak, Payakan, and some other sea creatures. No Sully family member other than Neteyem die in the movie.
Jake and Neytiri face a lot of dangerous situations in the film, right from carrying out a guerilla attack on the RDA soldiers to making a new home with the skeptical Metkayina.
In certain instances, you do worry about whether or not they might die. One such scene comes towards the end, when the two are trapped in Quaritch’s sinking ship. As luck would have it, Jake gets rescued by Lo’ak and Payakan, while Kiri summons sea creatures to help save Neytiri.
