Portkey Games’ Hogwarts Legacy is a genuinely intriguing mystery that adds so much to the Harry Potter lore. During the present-day quests, the player will befriend a Slytherin student, Sebastian Sallow, whose sister was allegedly cursed by the goblins.
With Sebastian, you’ll go on various quests trying to uncover the secrets of Anne Sallow’s curse and Isidora Morganach’s chronicles. While Sebastian is sure that the wretched goblins cursed his sister, you’ll soon find out that that’s not the case.
Anne Sallow was cursed by Victor Rookwood in Hogwarts Legacy and not the goblins. She was attacked in Feldcroft when Rookwood and Ranrok’s Loyalists were raiding Isidora’s tomb. During the attack Rookwood says his catchphrase to Anne, “Children should be seen and not heard,” before cursing her.
What led to Anne getting cursed?
At the age of eleven, Anne and Sebastian attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was sorted into Slytherin. Before their fourth year, Anne was attacked and cursed by Victor Rookwood when Feldcroft was raided by Rookwood, Ranrok, and Ranrok’s Loyalists.
She had rushed out to help the wounded villagers and was told “children should be seen and not heard” before being cursed by Rookwood.
After the events of Sebastian’s quest line and the game’s story, it will be revealed that Victor Rookwood is the one who cursed Anne, and the goblins were framed for it. She developed constant pain after this and was unable to attend school.
This forced her to leave Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry studies.
Before the Rookwood revelation, it was always believed that Ranrok’s Loyalists had done the deed, yet it was a dark wizard. Additionally, those who didn’t turn Sebastian in can tell him this news after they complete one of the last missions. Alternatively, Ominis will relay the message during the imprisonment ending.
Interestingly, Sebastian Sallow receives the most attention of any companion character in Hogwarts Legacy because his relationship questline is fundamentally woven into the main quest.
At first, Sebastian seems like a familiar Slytherin archetype, but we learn that his entire goal is finding a cure for his ailing sister, Anne.
Percival Rickman cannot be blamed since he did not know Isidora would have an affinity for Ancient Magic. However, without Percival intervening in the Feldcroft drought, Isidora may never have seen Ancient Magic.
The curse itself seems arbitrary either way because it is a plot device used to render Sebastian malicious and tormented by his sister’s illness.
However, the reveal that Rookwood had cursed Anne is only significant in how it changes Sebastian’s perspective on goblins.
Rookwood cursing Anne instead of simply killing her seems like a choice that would keep her alive for the events of this relationship questline.
Rookwood is not made out to be a redeemable character, and thus it would have made more sense for him to kill Annie to keep his involvement with Ranrok a secret. But cursing her with a nondescript illness is likely a worse fate.
Can you save Anne from her curse in Hogwarts Legacy?
No matter what you choose, you cannot save Anne. She will forever live with her curse in Hogwarts Legacy.
As Sebastian’s story progresses, we will eventually discover that he has invested a fair amount of time learning Dark Arts to lift Anne’s curse. This pursuit will ultimately lead him to know all the Unforgivable curses of Avada Kedavra, Crucio, and Imperio.
Once you get to the quest “In The Shadow of Time,” Sebastian casts an Unforgivable Spell on a goblin. He throws Imperio to mind control it, turning the knife on itself so he can save Anne from an untimely death.
Because of this action, their uncle Solomon is appalled and banishes Sebastian from their small estate.
In the following quests to figure out who cast that curse, Sebastian does have some leads, only to be met with more roadblocks. Eventually, during the “In the Shadow of the Relic” quest, his uncle finds and destroys the relic that could reverse Anne’s curse.
A few moments later, he cast the killing curse, Avada Kedavra, on his uncle.
Anne appears, casts Depulso on Sebastian, and kills all the Inferi with Incendio. After she learns her uncle is dead because of Sebastian, she destroys Slytherin’s Spellbook on the altar with Bombarda.
She vanishes with her uncle’s body saying, you’ve made your choice. This puts a massive dent in their relationship, and Sebastian fears he has lost his sister forever.
With his one hope of reversing the curse gone and now killing his uncle, Anne wants nothing to do with her twin brother.
She still lives on with her curse. No matter what options you choose in any of the quests, she’ll still have it. If you helped Sebastian and chose all the “right” dialogue options, the outcome would remain relatively the same. The only difference you see will be in the dialogue.
Although players can’t save her, they can still imprison Sebastian in Azkaban or let him go. It should be noted that this decision doesn’t affect the main storyline, but it does, of course, impact the outcome of the Sallow quest line.
Players eventually learn about the truth behind Anne’s curse during the showdown against Victor Rookwood, who was the real culprit that inflicted the curse. Before this revelation, it was always believed that Ranrok Loyalists had done the deed, yet it was a dark wizard.
The Morganachs and the Sallows Connection
The only explanation for her cure that is given to the player is that goblins cursed her in the Sallow’s hamlet of Feldcroft.
This hamlet becomes prominent later in the narrative when players learn that Feldcroft had endured a drought much earlier in history that was relieved by Percival Rackham.
One of Feldcroft’s inhabitants, Isidora Morganach, witnessed the Keepers casting spells to rectify the drought. She also saw the Ancient Magic used, demonstrating that she, too, had an affinity for it.
Isidora later attends Hogwarts as a Ravenclaw student. Eventually, she becomes a professor later in life, but she turns to experimenting with her Ancient Magic abilities to take individuals’ pain away, beginning with her father.
Isidora kept this ‘pain’ and stored it as a form of Dark Magic. Hogwarts Legacy’s Victor Rookwood and Ranrok pillage through Feldcroft in the present day while searching for these Dark Magic reserves. Therefore, Annie’s ailment and Sallow’s subsequent tragedies directly result from Isidora’s unchecked ambition.
Hogwarts Legacy is full of mysteries and excitement. We learn about different curses and new storylines as we keep progressing.
