Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together quite a few callbacks and references to previous films, other Marvel characters, and even characters. One such reference was the introduction of MCU’s version of the Sinister Six.
We all saw supervillains from previous Spider-Man movies appear in No Way Home. They were introduced as people who passed through different universes searching for Peter Parker after Dr. Strange’s spell went wrong.
However, we only see 5 supervillains in the third installment of MCU’s Spider-Man, which raises two prominent questions: Who are the Sinister Six, and who is the sixth member of this supervillain team-up?
Here’s a small disclaimer before I answer this question: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. So if you haven’t watched the film yet, steer away now. But if your curiosity is irresistible, be my guest as I delve into some juicy details about the film and the Sinister Six.
In MCU, the Sinister Six are a group of supervillains looking for Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. They’ve come from Sony’s two Spider-Man universes that starred Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The sixth member of this could be Venom, who also came from Sony’s universe that stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, aka Venom.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, we see the following five supervillains from Toby Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man:
- Green Goblin
- Dr. Octopus
- Sandman
- Lizard
- Electro
These are merely five supervillains, and a sixth member is missing from the Sinister Six. There could be multiple prospects for this position, such as the Vulture who appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming or Venom, who appeared in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 3.
But before I explain my theories on the sixth member, here’s some context. Across the comics, over several years, there have been various versions of the Sinister Six. The first version was a group of six members who joined forces to defeat Spider-Man.
These six members were:
- Dr. Octopus
- Electro
- Kraven The Hunter
- Sandman
- Mysterio
- Vulture
Furthermore, as the plotlines progressed and as more issues and editions came out, the Sinister Six group members kept changing. In fact, they were not always six members, and sometimes they were more as well.
Coming back to the MCU, as you can see, it has retained four members from the original version. While Kraven The Hunter hasn’t been introduced into the MCU, Mysterio died, so there’s no chance for those two to be the sixth member of the group.
I have a theory that the sixth member of the Sinister Six is Tom Hardy’s Venom. In the comics, Venom is a supervillain/antihero who has at one point been a part of the Sinister Six. In the MCU, we see Tom Hardy appear in the first post-credit/mid-credit scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
They show him and Venom drunk at a bar/shack trying to wrap their heads around Thanos, the Infinity Stones, and the blip. As they stand up to leave, they fade away just like the others who had come from other universes. This shows that Venom, who currently has the reputation of an anti-hero, would potentially be the sixth member of the Sinister Six in the MCU.
We also see a part of the symbiote left behind in the MCU, which means we might see more of Venom in future projects. While he may not be a part of the Sinister Six, I’m still excited to see how he interacts with our Spider-Man and perhaps other characters of the MCU.
