The second season of Amazon’s fantasy series The Wheel of Time introduced several new characters that fans of Robert Jordan’s novels were eager to see on screen. While many vital characters were already established in the first season, season 2 brought in many new faces that will play pivotal roles in the future. Here’s an overview of 13 crucial new Wheel of Time characters that premiered in season 2.
1Verin Mathwin
Verin Mathwin, portrayed by Emmanuelle Chriqui, is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah. She is among the wisest and most learned characters in the Wheel of Time series. Verin plays a pivotal role by the end of Robert Jordan’s story. She has been present since early on in the novels, so it is promising that she was introduced in season 2 of the show.
At this point, Verin is an ally to Moiraine and is privy to the knowledge that Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn. Verin’s intelligence and loyalty will prove invaluable as one of the few who knows Rand’s identity.
2Elayne Trakand
Elayne Trakand, played by Ceara Coveney, is the daughter of the heir to the throne of Andor. She is currently a novice training to become Aes Sedai at the White Tower. Though not as innately powerful as Egwene or Nynaeve, Elayne is still one of the strongest channelers born in hundreds of years.
In Robert Jordan’s novels, Elayne becomes one of Rand al’Thor’s love interests and eventually gives birth to his children after the Last Battle. By the end of the book series, Elayne takes her rightful place as Queen of Andor after her mother Morgase is forced to flee when presumed dead at the hands of one of the Forsaken.
3Ingtar Shinowa
Ingtar Shinowa is a Shienaran nobleman and a notable Lord Agelmar army member. Ingtar leads the hunt for the Horn of Valere in the Wheel of Time books with Rand, Perrin, and Mat. This is the same trajectory the show has put him on.
However, Rand and Mat have been given entirely new stories. Ingtar is a layered character who is likely to surprise some viewers by the end of The Wheel of Time season 2.
4Tomas
Tomas, portrayed by Jonny Pasvolsky, is the Warder bonded to Aes Sedai Verin Mathwin. In Robert Jordan’s novels, Tomas is oddly separated from Verin on occasions, remaining behind when she joins Rand, Perrin, and Mat on their quest for the Horn of Valere. He later reunites with Verin to help Perrin defend the Two Rivers from the Children of the Light and trollocs.
Thanks to the physical and mental augmentations of the Aes Sedai Warder bond, Tomas is a highly skilled fighter. He demonstrates unwavering loyalty in serving his Aes Sedai, Verin.
5Sheriam Bayanar
Sheriam Bayanar, portrayed by Mandi Symonds, also makes her first appearance in season 2 of The Wheel of Time. At the White Tower, she serves as the Mistress of Novices and is part of the Blue Ajah. In Robert Jordan’s novels, Sheriam joins the rebel Aes Sedai after the fracture in the Tower, later becoming Keeper of the Chronicles.
As an instructor, she is strict but fair, doling out harsh discipline to her novices when she deems warranted. Originally from Saldea, one of the Borderland nations on the Blight, Sheriam brings experience from this tumultuous region.
6Adeleas Namelle
In the Wheel of Time books, Adeleas Namelle is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah. Her sister is Vandene, who is also an Aes Sedai. In the TV adaptation, Adeleas has been made the sister of Verin instead.
Adeleas accompanies Elayne and Nynaeve on their quest for the Bowl of the Winds in the novels, though she is not one of the most powerful Aes Sedai, lacking the ability to Travel. Adeleas may have an expanded role in the show compared to her part in the book series.
7Bayle Domon
Bayle Domon is also introduced in The Wheel of Time season 2. Domon is a trader and the captain of the riverboat Spray. He hails from Illian and occasionally becomes entangled in the main characters’ stories.
He saves Rand from Shadar Logoth in The Eye of the World, passing him away from the city on his boat. He becomes entangled with Mat and the Seanchan, eventually marrying an ex-Seanchan Naval Captain.
8Selene
Selene’s introduction in The Wheel of Time season 2 is nothing like her book story, but she is present. Selene, the mystery woman in The Wheel of Time season 2, is secretly one of the Forsaken and was in love with Lews Therin Telamon in the Age of Legends. Knowing Rand is the reincarnation of Lews Therin, she latches onto him, trying to convince him to join her.
In the Wheel of Time books, Rand meets Selene in an alternate world after she sends him through a portal stone while he sleeps. She is a critical character, so it’s suitable for the show to introduce her early, even if it’s nothing like the books.
9Masema Dagar
Masema Dagar is a Shienaran soldier who eventually becomes the crazed Prophet of the Dragon. Masema, who initially hates Rand, worships him after seeing Rand fight Ishamael in the sky above Falme. Masema becomes the Prophet, gathering a large army that rampages across the continent, killing anyone who refuses to submit to the Dragon.
Rand sends Perrin to deal with Masema after things get out of hand, but not until Masema has gathered a massive cult-like following.
10High Lady Suroth
High Lady Suroth is a high-ranking member of The Wheel of Time’s villainous Seanchan nobility, and she later turns out to be a dark friend. She is a member of The Blood, the highest classification of Seanchan sovereignty. She captures Egwene al’Vere and collars her with an a’dam, making her a damane. Suroth is one of the more sadistic characters in The Wheel of Time, and she eventually becomes the highest-ranking Seanchan on the continent after the death of High Lord Turak. That is, of course, until the arrival of Tuon.
11Alwhin
The character of Alwhin is introduced in season 2 of the Wheel of Time TV series. She is a Seanchan servant or so’jhin to High Lady Suroth. Alwhin is a minor character adapted directly from the Wheel of Time novels. She makes an important discovery when she finds two Sul’dam collared with a’dam, proving Sul’dam is also capable of channeling.
This revelation has enormous implications for the Seanchan, but Alwhin only informs Suroth, who conceals the knowledge. While not a significant player, Alwhin unveils a secret that shakes the foundations of Seanchan society in both the books and the show.
12Anvaere Damodred
Anvaere Damodred is a minor character from the Wheel of Time books who has been adapted into the TV series in season 2. She is a Cairhienin noblewoman and the sister of Moiraine. Though Anvaere has little presence in the novels, she has already been given more prominence in the show than her book counterpart.
As Moiraine’s sibling, Anvaere has the potential for an expanded role and story arc in the Wheel of Time adaptation beyond what readers saw of her in the book series. It will be intriguing to see how the show further develops this previously minor character.
13Elyas Machera
Played by Michael Tuahine, Elyas is a Wolf brother who can speak with wolves telepathically. He helps guide Perrin in learning to control his wolfish powers. Though gruff, Elyas sees the nobility in Perrin and works to build his confidence. He represents a new mentor figure for the reluctant young leader.
The second season of The Wheel of Time has successfully introduced many fan-favorite characters from Jordan’s novels to viewers. While staying faithful to the books, the show also developed these new characters in fresh ways for the screen. With its expansive world and ensemble cast continuing to grow, The Wheel of Time has proven its ability to captivate fantasy fans old and new.
