Monarch season 1 finale ends with several twists and turns. Given the show’s confusing timeline, we have a hard time figuring out who is actually alive and dead.
Moreover, characters who are presumed dead reappear, while those who are expected to live suddenly say goodbye. The finale was full of one such character’s fate, although the makers leave us in the dark.
Nevertheless, for your convenience, I’ve put together the important characters and explained whether they’re alive or dead as of the season 1 finale.
1. Does someone die in Monarch season 1?
None of the main characters die in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. However, Lee Shaw is assumed to be dead, although his death has not been confirmed.
Given the way Keiko Randa returns to the surface alive, there is a chance that Lee Shaw did not die in the underground world. Moreover, we never see his body or any such signs to confirm his death.
A possible scenario for Shaw’s fate is that he was teleported to another location by the blue barrier that appeared in the episode. The barrier acts as a gateway for the Titans, akin to the fissures that lead to the Hollow Earth.
Therefore, Shaw might have been relocated by the barrier and could reappear in Monarch season 2.
2. Where did Lee Shaw go in the Monarch finale?
Lee Shaw could have returned to a different place on the surface. He could also be trapped in the true Hollow Earth as the underground world is the bridge between the surface and Hollow Earth.
If Shaw transports to a different location on the surface, he can return very soon. However, if he’s gone deep enough to reach Hollow Earth, the other members have to find a way to rescue him.
As Keiko Randa explained earlier, they were trapped in Axis Mundi, a “place between places.” Axis Mundi is the gateway between Hollow Earth and the surface, so it is possible that Lee went deep inside into the actual Hollow Earth.
We’ll have to wait for season 2 to know more about Lee Shaw’s fate and whether he returns to the surface.
3. Does Keiko Randa die in Monarch?
The ending of Monarch episode 9 confirms that Keiko Randa did not die in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. She was presumed to be dead after she fell into the underground in 1959. However, she survives as she passes safely through the underground world.
In 1959, Keiko fell down into the underground world after being chased by giant insects in Kazakhstan. She was presumed to be dead until the Shaw, Cate and the others found her in episode 9.
From her perspective, Keiko was in the underground world for only 57 days, although several years had passed in the surface world. However, the “gravitational distortion” that alters space-time in the underground realm prevents her from aging.
Upon returning to the surface world, Keiko realized some painful things about her life. She realized that she wasn’t able to experience Hiroshi’s childhood, growing up, and her family life.
Moreover, she wasn’t there to witness Bill Randa’s death in Kong: Skull Island, described briefly by Lee Shaw.
4. Does Bill Randa die in Monarch?
Bill Randa does not die during the events of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. However, his death is mentioned in the series as he died during the events of Kong: Skull Island.
Monarch tells the story in two different timelines, one set in 1959 and the other after 2014. Bill Randa is dead in the 2014 timeline, but he is alive in the 1959 timeline. When Hiroshi and the others find Keiko in the underground world, the two timelines merge.
Years have passed since Keiko disappeared into the underground world. During this time, Bill died as the events of Kong: Skull Island took place during these years. His death is not shown in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
5. Does Hiroshi Randa die in Monarch?
Hiroshi Randa is missing and presumed to be dead at the beginning of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. However, it is soon revealed that he faked his death and is alive.
After being attacked by a Titan in 2013, Hiroshi survived and traveled to Africa, where he discovered a portal to Hollow Earth. He is alive as of the season 1 finale.
