Squid Game Creator Reveals Return of Two Important Characters for S2

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed an important piece of information regarding the upcoming season of the hit Netflix series, announcing the return of two big names from Season 1.

When Hwang and actor Park Hae-soo attended Deadline’s Contenders Television to discuss the future of the South Korean dystopian survival drama, the creator confirmed the return of Gi-hun and the Front Man,

“Gi-hun for sure. He will be back, and I believe the Front Man will back, too.”

Actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun in the series, had previously expressed that he wanted his character to go on an unexpected journey.

As for the Front Man/Hwang In-ho, his story might give us his backstory and possibly also include his detective brother, Hwang Jun‑ho.

Since Season 1 saw In-ho shoot Jun-ho, their story might get complicated in Season 2. The detective wasn’t exactly confirmed dead, leading to many fans theorizing that he survived the gunshot wound and fall.

The creator also talked a bit about the show’s global success, hoping the show was able to break language barriers, providing better exposure to the brilliant films and TV shows outside the US.

“My hope is that a work like Squid Game in a little way has opened the door. I hope American audiences give the piece a chance and that you read the subtitles and watch without dubbing. We’re hoping that we open that opportunity.”

About his upcoming project, Killing Old People Club, Hwang added that his work from now on will undoubtedly have themes of economic inequality.

“For this project and in future projects, it’s impossible not to consider the political polarization, the cultural differences, and difficulties, as well as environmental climate changes that have been happening. I will be forced to observe and criticize and continue to handle these topics in future projects.”

Speaking to Variety recently, Hwang had said that pages of the script for Season 2 are still blank and only in his head, adding, “Everything is a secret.”

Given the creator’s previous statements, there’s still a long wait before any concrete updates about Season 2 are revealed. The series’ tentative premiere date is still ways down the road as Netflix plans to release it sometime in 2024.

Squid Game Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
