The DCEU as you know it is going to be turned upside down!
Months after first announcing that the DCEU will be “reset,” new creative heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had a press conference earlier in the week outlining just exactly what their plan is. So the period of uncertainty and chaos has finally ended!
Gunn and Safran have confirmed that the following older DCEU movies will still be part of the new regime: Shazam 1 and 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker.
There was a lot of information given out during this press conference and I’ve compiled all those details together to answer your most pressing questions. Let’s get into it!
1. How will the new DCEU be created?
It is believed that the upcoming Flash movie will “reset” the DCEU by using time-traveling. The events in The Flash will wipe out some of the older DCEU projects.
Despite all the controversy around The Flash and Ezra Miller, this film could actually be the DCEU’s saving grace, which will give the franchise a chance to start over. Gunn has highlighted how the Scarlet Speedster’s time-traveling abilities can rewrite events and serve as an explanation for why some projects in the DCEU are now void.
2. Which upcoming movies are part of the DCEU?
The upcoming DCEU films, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle are still rumored to be part of the new DCEU. However, it is yet unknown if Aquaman 2 will be included in the reset as well.
So there are four movies that were part of the old DCEU regime that were already filmed/in production and slated to be released soon.
Shazam 2 is safe from getting axed as it always seemed to be Justice League-arc adjacent and did not have any direct connections to it. Blue Beetle, on the other hand, as a completely new IP can easily fit into the new DCEU as well.
While Miller’s Flash has appeared in several DCEU projects (especially ones that Gunn and Safran aim to scrap), his film is crucial to the reset and hence will be a part of the new DCEU.
This leaves room for speculation only for Aquaman 2, as the character is a major part of the Justice League that the creative heads want to rewrite. Only time will tell what purpose Aquaman 2 will serve.
3. Which old movies/TV shows are still part of the DCEU?
Shazam!, Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker will still be part of the new DCEU. This is because they were either standalone projects or only adjacent to the main DCEU, thanks to which they can easily be integrated into the new DCEU.
As Gunn and Safran aim to rewrite to main Justice League superheroes and arc, the movies listed above are quite safe. It is also a little cheeky to say that Gunn will find a way to include his past projects (The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker) in his new DCEU run. In fact, Peacemaker is already confirmed for S2.
This won’t be a big task as these projects have mostly been independent of the “main” DCEU arc. Plus, they have also been massively successful and it would be a total shame to axe them!
4. Are Joker and The Batman part of the DCEU?
Projects like Joker, The Batman, and Teen Titans GO! will not be part of the DCEU, but will be DCU-adjacent in a franchise setting known as “Elseworlds.” Elseworlds will comprise of projects that are set in other universes.
To put it simply, these films will surely be “DC” films, just not part of the DC “Extended Universe.” Elseworlds is a great decision as not only does it save Joker and The Batman from getting axed, but encourages new DC properties that can have their own standing without relying on what’s going on in the DCEU.
So for all of you who were afraid for the Reeves’ Batman trilogy, rest assured it’s still happening. We have even better news for you – The Batman 2 has been confirmed for October 3, 2025.
5. Films in The Pipeline for the New DCEU
During the press conference, Gunn and Safron also announced what new projects will be in the pipeline for the new DCEU. The focus here was on the God and Monsters era which will focus on Superman (but won’t be an origin story).
No other major details about these projects have been announced. Have a look at the full list!
I. Films:
- Superman Legacy | July 11, 2025
- The Authority
- The Brave and the Bold
- Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
- Swamp Thing
- TV Shows:
- Creature Commandos
- Waller
- Booster Gold
- Lanterns
- Paradise Lost
So while it is bittersweet to have a full DCEU reset, it is definitely much-needed — and, you can’t help but get excited for these new projects that are being set up that will give the franchise a new flavor. Here’s wishing for the best!
6. About DC Movies
DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book publishers. It produces material featuring numerous well-known superhero characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Green Arrow. Most of this material takes place in a shared fictional universe, which also features teams such as the Justice League, the Suicide Squad, and the Teen Titans. The company has also published non-DC Universe-related material, including V for Vendetta, and many titles under their alternative imprint Vertigo Comics.
Film adaptations based on DC Comics properties have included serials, live action and animated films, direct-to-video releases, television films and documentary films.
