Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is out now (June 16) in movie theatres. The action-comedy sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek, has not been released on any streaming platforms as of yet.
Jackson, Hayek and Reynolds reprise their title roles as the hitman, wife and bodyguard respectively, with fresh faces Frank Grillo, Tom Hopper, Antonio Banderas, and Morgan Freeman gracing the screen for the sequel to The Hitman’s Bodyguard.
It opens up with Michael Byrce (Reynolds) accepting his decision to give up being a bodyguard. But the resolution doesn’t last long as Sonia Kincaid comes up to him for help. Together, they need to rescue her husband and hitman Darius Kincaid from a bunch of mobsters.
Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is only available in theatres currently. No official details have been released about having it on a streaming platform.
If Lionsgate follows suit as it did for its previous releases (Voyager and Spiral), we can expect to see Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard available to rent as Premium-Video-On-Demand. Depending on the theatrical reception, Lionsgate may decide whether to release it on PVOD after its standard three-week period, or longer if the box office does well.
For those of you wondering if the movie will be out on Netflix or HBO Max anytime soon, the chances are very low. Netflix has not yet acquired the licensing rights to any Lionsgate films. HBO Max, on the other hand, is tied to Warner Bros. and is again an unlikely streaming partner.
Lionsgate however, does have a deal with Hulu and FX. If the movie is set for a streaming platform, you may want to keep a lookout on Hulu.
Rotten Tomatoes has assigned an average rating of 4.4/10 rating to the movie, emphasizing that the washed-out tropes of an action comedy do seem a little stale and predictable, even with the class cast on screen.
But for a trip to the theatre and a carton full of popcorn in hand, this may make for an entertaining watch.
