God of War (2018) offers one of the deepest, challenging, and absolutely satisfying combat systems in any video game as of late. But, if you think that you have learned this combat system to the best of your abilities, then it’s probably time to take on some of the challenges of this game.
Being a test of both your combat abilities and your sanity, the corrupted Valkyries offer just the right level of challenge to satisfy your hunger for battle in this game.
Not to mention, there’s even an additional Valkyrie (Sigrun) in the game that you unlock after defeating all 8 of the main Valkyries that takes the difficulty level all the way to 100 – she’s there to push both you and Kratos to their absolute limits. You’re certainly going to need chocolates and tons of water for that one.
With how much I’ve lauded these optional bosses just now, I know what you might be thinking now – you wish to take on these Valkyries, don’t you? Well, I’m here to help you out with that.
Before anything else, though, let me tell you where the 8 Valkyries and Sigrun are in God of War.
- Valkyrie Gunnr: Thamur’s Corpse.
- Valkyrie Kara: between The River Pass and Foothills, Midgard.
- Valkyrie Geirdriful: Foothills, Midgard
- Valkyrie Eir: The Mountain, Midgard
- Valkyrie Rota: Helheim
- Valkyrie Olrun: Alfheim
- Valkyrie Gondul: End of Muspelheim
- Valkyrie Hildr: End of Niflheim
- Sigrun, Queen of Valkyries: Council of Valkyries
Now that we’ve got the general location of these “hard as nails” optional bosses – let’s dive into where these bosses precisely are and how one can make their fight with them a little easier.
1. Valkyrie Gunnr – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: Valkyries Gunnr sits in a Hidden Chamber within Thamur’s Corpse. This Hidden Chamber is hard to miss, considering how the campaign guides you to it – the fight, however, is still optional.
Recommended Level: 4-5
Recommended Gear and Tips: Since this would be your first Valkyrie, try to play things a little defensively to learn the attack pattern and acclimatize yourself to these battles – defensive gear would work the best. You can also use The Realm Shift Talisman to get used to a Valkyrie’s speed and land a couple of extra hits as well.
Use the fight with Gunnr to figure out what gear works best for you, whether it really is defensive or an offensive type.
2. Valkyrie Kara – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: You can find Kara at the River Pass in the image below. Inside the Witch’s Cave, you can find another one of Odin’s Hidden Chamber, where Kara awaits your arrival.
Recommended Level: Difficult at Level 5, easy at Level 6
Recommended Gear and Tips: The thing about Valkyrie Kara is that, apart from the usual Valkyrie attacks, she can also summon level 4 Draugrs for Kratos to deal with – it gets super tricky when the ranged Draugr starts showing up.
So, for this, we recommend going all out with your offensive gear and abilities and equipping an AOE Runic attack that can take out multiple enemies in a single go. However, as you take the Draugrs out, keep an eye out for Kara, and be ready to parry or dodge her as soon as she attacks.
3. Valkyrie Geirdriful – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: Geirdriful sits in The Foothills. Go up the path from Sindri’s camp and head straight instead of left for The Mountain – here, you’ll find the Valkyrie’s Hidden Chamber.
Recommended Level: 6-7
Recommended Gear and Tips: Geirdriful is like a mix of Kara and Gunnr, employing all sorts of mixups along with unblockable attacks to get Kratos. Considering that and how fast she can be, it’s best to go with The Realm Shift Talisman – be on your guard at all times and stop time to unleash hell on her. Most of her attacks can be handled by dodging to the side, with some managed easily with Atreus’ arrows, so playing passively and waiting for your opportunity to strike can get you through it.
4. Valkyrie Eir – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: In The Mountain, you need to head to the large opening where the lift mechanism breaks in the campaign – reach the far side from that place to find the Valkyrie.
Recommended Level: 5-6
Recommended Gear and Tips: So, the main thing to watch out for when fighting Eir is her counterattack when she shields herself with her wings. And for this, we recommend getting Runic attacks that can break through the shield (Alternatively, you can also double-tap your L1 to do the same). Most importantly, make sure to avoid her swooping “Valhalla” grab attack – that can really destroy your health bar.
Here, the only thing to recommend really is spacing yourself well throughout the fight – end up in a corner, and Eir will make short work of Kratos.
5. Valkyrie Rota – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: Located in Helheim, you can locate Rota beyond a wall of red sap near the second small bridge on the path to the bridge of the Damned, and of course, under a Hidden Chamber of Odin.
Recommended Level: Level 6
Recommended Gear and Tips: Rota is one of the more dangerous Valkyries of the bunch here, so you need to be very careful when fighting her – she relies heavily on unblockable attacks, so dodging around is what you’d mostly have to do.
She’s massively quick and agile, so don’t go for any heavy attacks in this fight, as they would leave you open for some very damaging strikes. Make sure to stick to Rota’s right and dodge in the same direction whenever she attacks.
Also, be watchful for a flying sweep where she straight up grabs Kratos and drags him along the ground, dealing massive damage – jump to the side when that happens to evade the attack. To add to that, she also neck stomps you three times, so prepare yourself to dodge that thrice.
6. Valkyrie Olrun – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: In Alfheim, take the boat to the Light Elf Shore and look for a small tunnel – this tunnel hides Odin’s Hidden Chamber, and in turn, Olrun herself.
Recommended Level: Level 5-6
Recommended Gear and Tips: So, Olrun is more or less a weaker version of Rota, carrying the same attacks except for the destructive grab attack of hers. To fight her, follow the same strategy as Rota and stick to the right, using only light and Runic attacks to dish out damage.
7. Valkyrie Gondul – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: Located in Muspelheim, Gondul awaits your arrival at the very end of the realm’s run, at the top of the mountain.
Recommended Level: Level 6
Recommended Gear and Tips: Gondul is a beast full of mixups, but the one thing that stays consistent with her, is her use of ranged AOE fireballs. But knowing that wouldn’t really help your case, as she loves to mix those fireballs with a ton of other attacks. The key here would be to move either backward (For something like the mace attacks) or to the right (swooping grabs) when dodging her attacks.
For this battle, the gear that I would recommend is an all-out offensive build that can deal as much damage as possible in one go and rely heavily on dodging. Look for opportunities to strike, and when they do, unleash hell on Gondul.
8. Valkyrie Hildr – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: In Niflheim, Hildr awaits you at the very end of the cursed mist maze.
Recommended Level: Level 6
Recommended Gear and Tips: The one prickly part of this battle is not Hildr herself, but the area you’ll be fighting her in. With the poison mist that surrounds the area, it’s better to grab the gear that lessens the overall effect on Kratos.
I say this as Hildr herself is not much of a threat to you. She has a small health pool, and most of her attacks can be easily blocked and countered.
Your main challenge in this entire battle is to not succumb to the poison by the time you reach Hildr. For this, you might want to try multiple runs in Niflheim to open all the chests in the area. Afterward, once you know the path to Hildr, run straight to her and engage as soon as possible.
Lastly, if you don’t mind the poison, you can go for a high-DPS build that can destroy Hildr in mere minutes.
So, you’ve made it to the end of your battle with Valkyries, and now it’s time to claim your reward – a badass Valkyrie armor, along with another Valkyrie fight that is a hundred times tougher than all the previous ones combined. It’s time to battle Sigrun, The Valkyrie Queen.
9. Sigrun, Queen of The Valkyries – Location, Recommended Level, and Gear
Where to find her: To fight Sigrun, you need to make your way to the Council of Valkyries – it’s North of The Lake of Nine. Once there, place the helm of each Valkyrie at their respective seats. Doing so will open up a tear in the center of the arena. Interact with it, and Sigrun will come crashing out, dragging Kratos’ face across the ground and starting the fight.
Recommended Level: You need to be at least Level 7 to stand a chance against her.
Recommended Gear and Tips: There’s no better way to put this. Sigrun is a tough-to-beat boss, like very, very TOUGH. Sigrun has an impressively big health pool, is relentless in her attacks, and carries the best moves of every Valkyrie that you’ve fought till now – God bless you if you’re fighting her on the peak difficulty of this game, Give me God of War, for the first time.
However, that’s not to say that the odds are against you – with a bit of planning, patience, water, and anything that calms you down, you can take her down with relative ease.
First and foremost, equip these items to help you last a little longer and help you understand this fight better:
- Superior Resurrection Stone
- Legendary Runic Vestment (Atreus)
- Ratatoskr Runic Summon (Atreus)
- A mix of Ivaldi’s Set and Valkyrie Set (Armor)
As for some general tips for the fight, Sigrun combines different moves quite rapidly, so playing passively and waiting for the opportunity to strike is the way to go. Not to mention, many of her attacks deal massive amounts of damage, so space yourself properly and maintain an optimal distance from her at all times.
Since Atreus’ arrows won’t work against her, use Ratatoskr to break her agro and land a few hits on her. Lastly, most of her attacks generally revolve around homing in on Kratos, so dodge that, and you’ll save yourself a ton of health and tears. Once you get the basic gist of her attack patterns, you can switch to any other build that you want and fight her your own way (I’d still recommend going with the same set, though).
Just remember – this is an endurance fight that can last anywhere from 5-10 minutes, so be patient at all times and don’t be greedy at any point in the battle.
All this is easier said than done, though. Mentally prepare yourself to die multiple times before you understand her attack patterns – but that’s the only hurdle you need to jump over for this fight.
Give it some time, endure any hardships along the way, and you’ll most certainly come out on top. So, in the end, all I can say is all the very best for fighting all the Valkyries and Sigrun in God of War.

Developed by Santa Monica Studios, God of War is a single-player action-adventure game. Unlike the previous installments of the franchise that deals with Greek mythology, this installment is set in Norse lore.
