A Frozen Flame is an extremely rare resource item in God of War (2018) that impossibly has both ice and fire properties. The Frozen Flame is the only item in the game that players can use to upgrade the Leviathan Ax, and it can be acquired simply by playing through the main storyline and defeating some tough bosses.
Players can acquire five (5) Frozen Flames in God of War (2018):
- Given by Brok, the dwarf, during the second chapter.
- By defeating the first ogre in the Foothills.
- By defeating Járn Fótr, the troll in The Mountain.
- By defeating Magni and Modi in Thamur’s Corpse.
- By purchasing it from the dwarven shop using Chilling Mist of Niflheim after completing the main story.
1Frozen Flame – Given by Brok
The first Frozen Flame will be given to you by Brok, the Dwarf, during the second chapter of the game, “Path to the Mountain.”
Just keep following the quest objectives, and eventually, you will come across Brok stuck with his cart on a wooden bridge. He and his brother, Sindri, are the creators of the Leviathan Ax, so he will offer you the first Frozen Flame to upgrade the ax and introduce you to the entire gear upgrading system of the game.
2Frozen Flame – Defeat the First Ogre
The second Frozen Flame can be acquired by defeating the first ogre you encounter at the “Foothills” during the near end of the second chapter, “Path to the Mountain.”
Ogres are slow and clumsy creatures, but they hit hard, so dodge their eventual punches. After every punch, you will get enough time to register a few strong hits. If you continue the combo of your attack, the ogre may get staggered, allowing you to do more damage. Finally, unleash all your spartan rage to take it down. Collect the Frozen Flame from the ground after killing the ogre.
3Frozen Flame – Defeat Járn Fótr, the Frost Troll
The third Frozen Flame can be acquired by defeating the frost troll, Járn Fótr, during the middle of the fifth story chapter, “Inside the Mountain.”
Just like the ogres, trolls are also slow enemies, but they hit harder. They also have more health to their names, and as a result, are difficult to kill.
Dodge all of Járn Fótr’s stomp attacks and weapon swings. You will get enough time to deal significant damage to him after each dodge. Make sure to keep the troll on the defensive using your runic attacks followed by Atreus’ Runic Summon or Light Arrows. Keep chipping away at its health, and eventually, you will defeat him. Once the troll dies, he will drop the Frozen Flame.
4Frozen Flame – Defeat Magni and Modi
The fourth Frozen Flame can be acquired by defeating Magni and Modi in Thamur’s Corpse at the end of the seventh story chapter, “The Magic Chisel.”
You will have to take on Magni and Modi simultaneously in this boss fight. You can block most of Magni’s combo attacks, but his running attacks can’t be blocked, so dodge them. The same applies to Modi and his shield charge attacks too. Focus on one enemy at a time and strike him till he gets stunned and hits the ground, then switch your target.
This boss fight has three phases, and all of them require you to be good at dodging and blocking. Use your shield to block any projectiles, then move in for a swift attack. Follow this strategy until you defeat both the Aesir gods. After winning the battle, collect the Frozen Flame from the ground.
5Frozen Flame – Purchase from the Dwarven Shop using Chilling Mist of Niflheim
The fifth and final Frozen Flame can be purchased from the Dwarven shop after completing the entire main story, using the Chilling Mist of Niflheim.
Complete the dwarven favor “Ivaldi’s Workshop” in Niflheim and open the chest in the central chamber of the realm using 5,000 Mist Echoes. This chest will give you the Chilling Mist of Niflheim. Head back to the dwarven shop and go to the “resource” option under the “buy” category to purchase the final Frozen Flame. Once you buy and use it, the Leviathan Ax will get fully upgraded.
