The third installment in the Ghostbusters franchise is less than a month away and will be the official follow-up to the 1989 sequel.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will follow a single mom and her two kids as they arrive in a small town where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
(Of course, there’s the 2016 reboot, but let us collectively pretend that disaster never happened.)
Afterlife is already proving to be quite impressive with the tiny details, as director Jason Reitman has revealed that the films’ classic Proton Packs will get a major upgrade in the upcoming sequel.
While talking to Adam Savage at New York Comic-Con 2021, Reitman revealed that the proton packs will have an “on” switch which was never seen in the previous films. In the original films, the proton packs were being switched on, but the location of the switch was never revealed.
Reitman demonstrates how the switch works in the video and tells Savage,
“You got the switch. This is amazing! This is like the one real addition to the pack. It was really important to Gil [Keenan] and I that we have the switch from the movie that is basically implied in the original but is never seen.”
Jason Reitman
Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original films.
If Jason is paying attention to tiny details, fans of the original films can be assured that he will do right by his father’s legacy. A majority of the early reviews for the film have been positive.
Adam Savage’s YouTube channel has another video where he examines the props used for the new film. It explains how they were built using the latest technology while maintaining the original “Ghostbusters aesthetic.”
There will also be an upgraded version of the RTV, expanding on the Ghost Trapper with remote control and off-road tires.
Now, all you need to do is wait and decide for yourself if Ghostbusters: Afterlife does justice to the classic franchise when it comes out exclusively in theaters on November 19.
