Commander Cody is back in Star Wars: The Bad Batch and so is chaos. The latest episode of The Bad Batch brings back the fan-favorite character of Commander Cody and leaves us hanging with one question: where exactly does he go at the end of episode 3?
At the end of The Bad Batch season 2, episode 3, we see Admiral Rampart instructing Crosshair to be the leader of yet another mission. Crosshair then enquires about Commander Cody, and Rampart says that he is AWOL – Absent Without Leave. In other words, he’s away from his duties without permission.
It is not clear where Commander Cody goes at the end of The Bad Batch season 2, episode 3. But it is likely that he has left the Empire as his faith in the Empire has been shaken, and he now wants to redeem himself.
If you’ve observed Cody in the Star Wars franchise, he’s always been a little pessimistic or cynical about the true intentions of the Empire. The incident which added fuel to the fire was the Imperial Officer brutally murdering Governor Tawni Ames, which made him question the Empire’s intentions, and in turn, his own. So, there’s a high chance that he might be planning something against the Empire.
Popular fan theories suggest that The Bad Batch could reunite Commander Cody and Rex after a long wait. Some fans have also predicted a potential reconciliation arc with Obi-Wan Kenobi. We can’t really rule out any possibility till the next episode airs, so let’s keep our ideas coming in!
During The Clone Wars, it was Cody who served as second d-in-command to Kenobi. He was also the one who ordered his death during Order 66. As fans we know that Kenobi didn’t die, but Cody believes that he killed him. So, it is natural that Cody is now questioning his own actions and has therefore gone AWOL to reflect and correct himself.
One thing can be said for sure about Cody’s absence: he will be trying to redeem himself in the upcoming episodes, and the best way to take that step is to team up against the Empire. So, he is AWOL for the same reason. Cody is finally leaving the Empire for good.
Cody’s conversation with Crosshair in this week’s episode clearly shows that he has always wanted to make the galaxy a better place. However, the Empire is not doing it, so he does not want to side with the Empire anymore.
Now, we’ve to wait for the rest of the episodes to see if Cody returns later in the season. The trailer hints that the Empire will track him for desertion. If that happens, Cody will surely need a lot of help. It will be interesting to see whether Crosshair will continue to side with the bad guys and kill Cody, or actually switch sides and leave with him.
Either way, Cody leaving the Empire will have a huge impact on Crosshair and his character arc in the upcoming episodes. As of now, we’re not sure where exactly Cody goes at the end of this week’s episode, but he has most likely gone away from the Empire after realizing his mistakes.
