It is not everytime that you find a story about gambling interesting. Gambling in anime culture has always been a game of two things: psychological wits and the money you stake.
Anime about a battle where people are willing to bet their money, relationships, and lives are goosebump-inducing and rare to come by. Nonetheless, there are some shows like Akagi, Kaiji, One Outs, and now a thriller has joined the lot, Kakegurui.
Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler is a manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tooru Naomura. This psychological thriller isn’t for just anyone unless you can deal with a cast of crazy characters!
The story of Kakegurui revolves around Yumeko Jabami, who transfers to the privileged Hyakkaou Private Academy. She overturns the school’s foundations from its very core as she teaches the students what it means to be a real gambler.
With the grand finale of Rei Batsubami taking up Yumeko’s name at the end of the previous season, the anime gave a great ending to the last episode. But the fans were left hanging as the season ended right in the middle of the election arc.
However, there’s a good reason why MAPPA ended the story right there and didn’t go ahead. The anime simply caught up with the manga series and didn’t have much source material to depend on.
Though, it could be said that Season 2 set up the stage for the sequel until the manga has enough content. How long will the fans have to wait for the next gamble?
1. Season 3 Premiere Date & Visuals
Kakeguri Season 3 episodes may premiere sometime in Fall 2021 or early 2022. Netflix has picked up the rights for the show outside of Japan.
There is no official news available for the renewable status of the series either by Netflix or MAPPA.
Studio MAPPA might take more than a year to complete the productions of the highly anticipated season. It is safe to assume it would run for 12 episodes like its predecessors.
Any plans to renew the show must have been interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. As the fans and the show has always remained at the top of the most wanted anime lists.
When the anime aired in 2017, it received lots of appreciation from the fans. Due to the high audience demand, there was even a launch of Season 2 in 2019. It also received a live-action drama on TV in 2018 with a sequel coming up in 2021.
But the main reason for the delay is the lack of source materials. As of June 2020, only 13 volumes of the manga have been released. The previous seasons of Kakegurui used up the first ten volumes, so only three remain to be adapted.
Even considering that the creators also include exclusive anime content, it takes time to make up for the two volumes. MAPPA can only begin production after a few more manga volumes have hit the market.
Speaking of the animation studio, MAPPA already has its schedule busy with Yuri on Ice the Movie and Attack on Titan Season 4, which are coming in late 2020.
Kakegurui is not the same without the characters’ facial expressions that borderlines human insanity, and its only MAPPA who can do it for us.
Kakegurui will cover volumes 11-13 for Season 3, and more if the creator makes them by 2022.
The covers feature Kirari Momobami and Mary Saotome, respectively.
The story adapts the novel series and could have some characters exclusive to the anime series like Rei Batsubami. Season 3 may also add new characters later.
The official sites have not released any teasers for the anime yet. We will update this article when we get the information.
2. Expected Plot
Season 2 finished Kakegurui on a filler since Rei Batsubami is a character created solely for the anime. But even the grand finale left the fans impatient as the main plot involving the election was still unfinished.
Season 3 will continue from the election arc, or it might dive right into the battle with the Momobami sisters.
SPOILER
(After Ririka Momombami wins against Nozomi Komabami, she challenges Rin Obami at a game of War.
This showdown is a farce of Ririka to show her strength to Mary Saotome. Can Ririka win against a branch member of her family, Rin, who holds such extreme grudge against her?)
Rei’s original story took the place of the Ririka-Rin showdown in the previous season. The manga creator drafted the last episode surrounding Rei, so maybe there was a reason for this shift in story arcs.
The production team must need this time to add more details and characters to the new season.
3. Recap
I. Season 1
Hyakkaou Private Academy is an elite school where the students’ gambling skills determine the hierarchy. Jabami Yumeko is a new transfer who likes the thrill of gambling away money.
Yumeko wins against many opponents, including Mary turning her into a Pet. But she loses a game of Life or Death and receives her Life Schedule from the Student Council.
So, Yumeko undergoes a Debt Exchange game, allies with Mary, and wins. But she doesn’t repay her 10 million debt; instead, she wants a match against Kirari. They face each other after matches of turmoil with idols and families.
They both bet their expulsion on a final game of Tarot Cards of Fate. After Ryota decides to select a random card instead of picking a marked card, the game ends in a draw.
Kirari decides to dissolve the Student Council while Yumeko continues to be a Compulsive Gambler for the thrill. Ryota comments about how Yumeko has changed the school.
II. Season 2
Season 2 continues with gambling in Hyakkaou Academy, but this time with the Momobami clan’s interference. Kirari introduces the new members of the Student Council, while the Momobami clan announces their intention to win the election and take over the Academy.
Yumeko gets poisoned before the election challenge starts and gets replaced by Mary. Mary later wants to become the president as Yumeko is too addicted to gambling and risking her life.
The games use coins to bet and, consequently, win each participant’s votes, and thus Yumeko, Kirari, and Terano remain in the finals. Sayaka bets her relationship with Kirari and challenges Yumeko but fails.
Seeing this, a Hundred Vote Auction takes place, which reveals the true self of Rei Batsubami. Rei exposes her revenge on the Momobami clan and bets an all-or-nothing gamble against Yumeko and loses. The elections remain incomplete.
