Johnny Depp Will Soon Be Back in the Movies with Jeanne Du Barry

Johnny Depp’s comeback movie, Jeanne du Barry, is finally nearing its theatrical release date. The French film marks Johnny Depp’s return to the spotlight after his legal victory over his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Jeanne du Barry, formerly known as La Favorite, is a historical drama that tells the story of King Louis XV and his romance with Jeanne, a commoner who becomes his mistress, played by Maïwenn.

While there is ongoing speculation about the actor’s return to the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, his upcoming performance in Jeanne du Barry as the male lead is highly anticipated as it is being seen as his comeback film.

While the film’s release date in the US is not yet confirmed, there is enough information to make a quick guess about when it may be available in theaters or on streaming services in the US.

Jeanne du Barry is scheduled to have its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2023, widely regarded as the ultimate celebration of movies across the world. Typically, the festival features the most critically acclaimed films released that year. So, it is a good sign for Jeanne du Barry, more so as it has been selected as the opening film for the event.

This puts the film in the same category as other highly acclaimed movies such as Annette, which opened the 2021 festival, and Everybody Knows, which opened the 2018 festival. However, Depp’s comeback film will not compete in the festival and therefore won’t be in the running for the Palme d’Or, the festival’s most prestigious award.

Although most countries have not announced their release dates yet, Jeanne du Barry is set to premiere in France and Switzerland on the same day as its premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the film will hit theaters in the Netherlands on September 14th and in Spain on September 29th.

It’s expected that other European countries will have their own release dates within this time frame, but this is a matter of the production companies’ collaborations with distributors in each country. Furthermore, the movie’s performance at the Cannes Film Festival may begin a bidding war for distribution rights, leading to changes in release dates or distribution plans.

Considering the good sign that Jeanne du Barry is opening at Cannes, it’s probable that the producers will be looking for a release date during the awards season in the US, which typically begins at the fourth quarter of the year.

Critically acclaimed films are always released closer to the awards season and target popular award ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. It’s highly likely that Jeanne du Barry will be released in US between October and December, especially if the movie is successful at the Cannes Film Festival.

The U.S. distribution of Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry has not yet been finalized, and discussions regarding a distributor may take place after the movie’s premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. However, there’s also the possibility that the film could go directly to a streaming service, with Netflix being one possible destination.

The movie has already been confirmed to stream on Netflix in France, but only 15 months after its theatrical release owing to French laws that prohibit streaming service releases within 15 months of a film’s theatrical debut. Therefore, if Jeanne du Barry does make its way to Netflix in the US, it’s expected to release during the winter of 2023.
